Why wouldn't you buy that coin? image

Definately pass. Go ahead and give the dealer my contact information, I'll spare him the humility and take it off his hands for whatever you were going to pay image

You'd have to have some nads to AT a pattern.

I am a big fan of the reverse but not the (Morgan) obverse. Since the obverse contributes 70% to the overall score, I personally would pass.

What if it were reverse holdered??imageimage

What if it were reverse holdered??

    Then, 70% says, "Yes."

Edited to add: Lakes need not worry about Mark. He already has one.

Ex: Garrett? If so, it's much darker than the image. Better lay off it.

See coin #1 at this link..

Only one mystery left: Who can tell us where the coin was between 1877 and 1883?

In the collection of James E. Blaine

    Well done.

Funny. This coin is one of the best of only six known, it's the first appearance of the Morgan Dollar obverse design, and it has a provenance that goes back to something earlier than 1883. How is it even possible that something this cool can be privately owned, much less reasonably affordable?

It's really an ugly design. Why not have it sent here and I'll watch it for a while and spare you the grief.

Andy/Coinkat - what can you tell us about Blaine??

Interesting that it would have 4 owners in it's first 100 yrs, then appear for sale 4 times since 1998.

  • Is that NGC 65?
A 1943 copper Lincoln will still only buy a gumball out of the machine, but you can purchase the machine and the store with that same cent.

Yes, NGC P65. Stole the pictures from ANR. Check out their website for the writeup (9/03).

Have decided to buy it from Rick Kay - thanks for the poll advice. imageimage

Love it, it is a wonderful coin/pattern.

It is interesting that the lower arrowhead on the reverse is on a bolt of lightning (or so it appears from the zig-zag shaft of the arrow).

I wonder what made someone consider doing that? I'd hate to try to shoot an arrow that looked that way!

Never noticed that before -- that is a strange quirk of the design.

Glad to hear you're buying it Lakes image

That is an intresting arrow. Both the base (the eagle is standing on) and the arrows seem to anticipate designs of the 1920-30's. I suspect it was "artistic license" to fill the space left below the other 2 arrows.
