Am I crazy? (For Holed Coin Collectors)

So, I was doing my rounds on Ebay and decided to reclaim high bidder on this coin. It's a Seated Liberty Dollar at about $90... with a hole in it. The thing is, I feel completely 'fine' bidding it up a bit more and hoping to win, however, I also realized that I pay under spot many times for holed 19th century gold. Do you think it's reasonable to pay a net grade amount for a coin net graded w/ hole by PCI for 'fun'?

After I started thinking about it, I'm sort of on the fence about it. Any thoughts from other holed coin collectors out there on this subject?

Nice one- go for it! image

It's a far sight better than mine. But I got mine in a nice cheap bulk lot.

I call it the "Stealth Eagle" variety. He's invisible, but there's a little bit of his shield peeking out so you know he's there. image

    "Surface damage".

That's the understatement of the century! image

I cracked my old Draped quarter out of a PCI red-label slab. Now it's a duplicate, since I just got another from granddad. Granddad also sold me this great Draped half- I stole it from him, for fifty bucks in trade! As you can see, it's a substantial upgrade from my old half.

I've cracked holeys out of slabs twice, actually. I have an 1870's Canadian half that was in an ANACS VG details/net FR02 holder. Sometimes you have to wonder what people were thinking, slabbing such things.

But sometimes you have to wonder about us holey coin collectors, too, I guess. In answer to your title question, the answer is yes, you're definitely crazy. I should know. Takes one to know one. image

In that respect, you've been fortunate. I sometimes have trouble buying them AT spot price.

That's an amazing deal. I've been looking for a holed Draped Bust myself for my collection. Hopefully one day I'll run across one that great looking image

Personally I think paying that much for that coin is silly.
  • I see no problem with your holed coin, looks pretty good to me.

Lord Marcovan's stealth eagle coin is cool, that looks like a good solid P01 at ANACs too.
Maybe the hole would make it a Net P00. image

You can collect what you want and don't worry about what other people think. That's whats making collecting fun. It's what you enjoy.

Good point. I was mainly trying to figure out if I'm getting too caught up in going out of my way to collect holed coins that I was paying considerably more than I should for them at times (From a sane third party's perspective); I see the opinions are mixed, so I'll just keep on keeping on image

    Thanks for the responses,

Question is: Does Braddick already have one in his collection?

Wee, Won it without getting sniped for once!

  • Are you crazy? No. I think that was a good buy on your part. Nothing wrong with holed coins. In fact, one could argue that they possess more history and mystique than problem free EF coins of the same type. Jmho. I like old, worn coins. When I was a kid, that was all that i could afford. I especially liked love tokens. Always wondered who owned them, what they were given for and to whom. Neat stuff.

Don't know if you've seen it yet, but there's a neat Draped Bust Dollar love token up for auction right now. Price is a bit high, though still a very neat token.
