New member today & already have a question

stev32kstev32k Posts: 2,098 ✭✭✭
I just joined the PCGS collectors club as a gold member and want to submit several coins for grading. However, I question about one of them; it is an 1834 Half-Cent that "may" have been cleaned. I can't really tell. I've posted a large high resolution photo here: http://www.pbase.com/stev32k/image/35553365/original could I impose on someone to look at the pictures and see if they can determine if it has been cleaned. The link will take you to the obverse photo, just click next in the upper right corner to see the reverse.

Thank you very much,

Steve Zeigler

I can't get to the pics either, but I can tell you that PCGS is not that strict on pre-1850 material, because most collectors of the period cleaned their coins.

Sorry about that I didn't realize they were password protected. I didn't mean for them to be - try it again. Think I removed the protection.

    Welcome Steve.

It appears that your half cent might have been lightly cleaned. The color looks ok, though. Sorry I can't tell more without having the coin in hand.

Wow! Thanks for all the quick responses. I thought it might be hours or even days before I got a response. Does any one have an opinion on whether or not I would be wasting money to submit the coin for grading? I don't want to waste time and money unnecessarily. I do enough of that already.

It's kinda strange how "LIBERTY" looks something like "LIRERTY".

I don't think the rim damage would prevent it from being slabbed, I've seen coins from that era with considerably worse rim damage slabbed by PCGS. It might knock it a grade or two though.

EXCEPT when it comes to copper. I've been burned big time with body bags on copper that in the condition census by EAC standards. I'm talking about pre 1800 material that currently hard as hell to find. The coins in question had decent to good eye appeal. If PCGS and NGC were as tough on early silver and gold has they are on copper that were be very few of those coins in slabs.

1834 is a fairly common date in the half cent series, so the services will be free to get ruthless.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I feel at home already.

If I'm reading the responses right it seems to be the general consensus that PCGS will grade and slab the coin. Anyone disagree with that?

Has it been cleaned? I believe it has been lightly cleaned.

Will they grade and slab the coin? From your images, I would say they would.

The color looks a little off. Where exactly has the coin been for the last 170 years? If you can give me a day-to-day account that might help on determining if it were cleaned.

It does look like it has nice details. I would grade it MS-62 due to subdued luster.

    Welcome to the boards.

    real nice half cent
    definitely uncirculated
lightly cleaned, which is acceptable i think.
    62-63 sounds right to me.
