On how many separate occasions has the U.S. Post Office failed to deliver a coin package to or from

ms70ms70 Posts: 13,954 ✭✭✭✭✭

4 for me. 2 being delivered to me from a dealer, 2 being shipped from me to PCGS. I'm getting tired of this.

I'm wondering how many times it's happened just among our forum members.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • How were those packages to PCGS sent? Were they registered mail? Just curious about that. I have only had one package undelivered, the destination address label came off and they sent the package back to me. I started taping the address labels on after that. Ive had very good luck with the post office.

  • Once, from me to the mint for replacement of proof sets. They never received them image

I print my shipping labels on plain paper, and attach them to the package using glue sticks. Much cheaper than adhesive labels, and I believe they are much more secure than the self adhesive labels.

One package I sent first class mail in a bubble mailer apparentely did not make it and one package insured sent to me did not make it. 2 packages out of over 300 coming or going. Not bad IMO.

    zero problems

I bought a sample from our own wanker image, didn't get insurance and the coin never arrived. Being the good wanker that he is, a replacement coin was sent in no time at no additional charge to me. Since then I've probably spent close to a $1000 ( a WAG) with this wanker.

Zero problems except that they usually need to be signed for and I need to pick them up when I was not available to receive. My post office is very reliable (so far).

  • I had one that was delivered, but the coin inside was gone. When I looked at the package, it had been torn open and then taped up. On the front of the envelope was marked "numismatic item" and then the customs stamp next to it. Figured some A**hole in Chicago or NY saw the marking and figured out it was something to "look into". image I assume the USPS doesn't hire the best of people in large cities like that, so I am glad that I live near a smaller city, and have not (so far) had any problem with the local USPS in regards to sending anything off and having it "lost". Since my overseas shipment experience, I have not bought anything else from anyone outside the US.

  • I have never had anything lost or destroyed on my part as me being the sender.

On the other hand I've had 4 purchases lost or destroyed by sellers trying to send on the CHEAP ... 3 using inferrior bubble wrap which ripped open ... The mailers made it but no coins .. 1 item supposedly containing 45 coins the seller never even put them in a box ... package destroyed .. 7 coins made it to me ...

To whomever thinks "ONLY" 1% or 2% of your items didn't make it to the buyer is acceptable should rethink their CHEAP method of sending their coins.

I for one want to receive my purchase. I do not want to file a claim with the Post Office.

None yet. However, just this week I received a letter with a small coin, and that letter was sliced open. The acetate tape was not tough enough to stop it. Another letter was jammed inside my letter.

The one and only reason my coin was still inside was because the dealer used a cardboard safe mailer to house the coin. At first glance, I thought I was hosed!

  • I've never had a package not arrive. On three occaisions the coin was missing but it was the fault of poor packaging by the seller, not the fault of the USPS. I have had a couple shredded by the post office and arrive in plastic bags marked "damaged in processing", but everything was there.

For that reason, I only ship coins in boxes, not envelopes. The envelopes go through sorthing machines and will get damaged.

Out of over 1000 coin transactions I've had two problems. One of my purchases never arrived from Canada and one of my sales to a US customer didn't arrive. Sounds like you have an isolated problem. I'd file a complaint with a Postal inspector!!

Only problem I had was sending a coin to coppercoins. About 10 days after sending it out it came back postage due. The two oz bubble mailer had a 60 cent stamp. Appearently the carrier thought it was 37 cents. Sent it back out withh PO tellers blessing. Hopefully it gets through this time.

Only 1 in over 1000 didn't make it. It was insured for $250 and the PO sent me a check
for $250. 2 have been damaged, One going and one coming.
  • I had zero lost, but one took over four months to make it to me mailed first class. The postmark was four months old too.
Real cheap dealer, he package taped the coin in 1/2 of a flip to the inside of a envelope and mailed it to me first class.
The envelope was nice and undamaged too.

  • It's only happened to me 2 or 3 times, but once was a 1939 Rev 40 5c proof
in PCGS PR66 that got lost on the way to me. It took me over a year to
    find another one!

One had a fairy inexpensive coin & was shipped Priority Mail. The other was worth $1800 & went Registered Mail. The post office
paid off but had no interest in forwarding the matter to the Postal Inspectors, so I did so myself. I gave them all the info & told them
I'd do whatever they need for assistance. The only thing I was able to find out is that it was tracked to California & disappeared there.
I never heard from anyone again.

One item I mailed to an e-bay bidder disappeared. It was insured for $100, and in due time the PO paid it.

I did have another e-bay sale not reach the seller.... until I told him he would be required to sign the postal insurance claim (penalty for fraud $10,000). Suddenly it arrived, and it was someone elses that didn't come.

I had a $10 coin that didn't arrive and the seller said he mailed it May 4th.

It was finally delivered on Sep 10 - with a postmark of May 4th

No idea where it was stuck in the system, but it took the scenic route to get to me image

I've been right here for going on 20 years yet my carriers screw up regularly in regards to delivering to me. Sometimes my mail goes somewhere else in the neighborhood. One pkg worth over $1500 NEVER made it here. It was found some time later chunked in a corner of the big postal complex in Memphis. I got my $ back and the seller got his coins back. There was a big ole investigation and all ended well.

So far as outgoing within the past year....3 times, all under questionable circumstances( starting with the least expensive)
1- A raw Mercury Dime, properly packaged and insured, allegedly never made it to a farmer in Wisconsin, I didn't even bother with a claim, just sent another one. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that one made it either cuz I never heard from the guy. If he ripped me, he made out quite well.

2- Some genius from the vastness of Montana wins a coin worth a couple hundred dollars, knows it's coming and MUST sign for it yet leaves for a couple of weeks. Nobody knows what became of the coin. Claim filed yet the buyer is antsy and threatens to neg me so I paid him out of my own pocket and reimbursed myelf with claim money. I'll lay 10 to 1 that he has the coin, an NGC 66 1942-S Quarter AND the money....God bless him. Blocked bidders list.

3- Ongoing...somewhat mysterious but not too hard to figure out. Returned a coin to a Military installation via insured mail. The entire fiasco was nothing but a lie from the get-go. Anyway, the "loss" is the USPS' fault. They lost track of it and here I am 2 months after returning it, still waiting on my money.

Out of all this, changes have been made around here. Thanks to reading this forum and the help of a couple forum members I have downloaded the "Click-N-Ship" Program which satisfies Paypal should there ever be another investigation. Items under $50, instead of having the Red Insured "Steal Me" stamp on them now leave out of here insured with e/ signature confirmation. I have the ability to print my own shipping labels and even insure them right here for up to $200....anything above and beyond this I still have to go to the Post Ofice to insure. All these track and confirm #s are entered into each Paypal transaction....manually if not an eBay transaction and automatically if I choose to print the label thru Paypal.image
