Even Russ can’t complain about statistical manipulation in this poll. The only possible votes are YES or NO. Those who are not sure don’t even vote.

I'm not sure if they've tightened up too much. NGC, on the other hand, *definitely* has.

When no-doubt DCAMs are given CAM grades, yeah, they are tougher than a year ago ...

    I agree
  • BTW- ANACS has tightened up in last year as well IMHO.

There is no question PCGS is grading tougher now. Tight grading is good, but lately they've frequently been crossing the line from tight to stupid.

    Ok, then I will:
The poll is biased because of the fact that the "yes" option is prefilled default. That may be influencing the pollee's (pollacks?).image

Excellent point! You are right of course, there should be an impartial starting point. I could have created a NULL vote but some of the jokers here would click on it just to throw a monkey wrench into the works.

How can they be simultaneously "tightening" and having "gradeflation"? image

For myself, I've never submitted to PCGS, but I did crack 3 PCGS slabs in the past 2 days..

Three of those coins were graded recently. Only one of the four was graded DCAM. Guess which one it was.

    I'm sure it's the pics, but I don't see a single DCAM..image

The poll does not allow for a PCGS is grading looser vote.

    Joe.

hmmm. well, let's not hijack the thread. (oh hell, let me guess again.. the second one?)
does your example indicate both "tightening" on the designation and "gradeflation" on the number?

Yep. It was graded about three years ago. The other three were graded this year, and they all blow it away for contrast.

The first is an MS67DCAM, the other three are MS66CAM.

I don't think you can intelligently answer this question unless you are submitting many coins on at least a monthly basis and confine your comments to a specific series and a specific grade range (that you submit on a regular basis). For example, I think Russ would be in a position to comment re high end Kennedy Halves. Personally, I have no idea, as I submitted all of four coins in the last year.

I have submitted several hundred coins this year and I really do think they have tightened up on granting DCAM status. I have noticed this in the 60's especially. In comparing older PCGS slabs (that are DCAMS) with newer PCGS slabs (that are not DCAMS), both coins quite often look the same to me. Granted, I am not an expert, this is just an observation I have made.
