Common Numismatic Terms & Phrases Translated....

"Market Acceptable" -Translation: "Damn, I have no freakin' idea how or why this thing toned that way, sure is pretty though........market acceptable.
"Shot 6" -Translation: I've already tried this coin 37 times for an MS66 at PCGS, it'll probably upgrade for you though.
"A Liner" -Translation: A coin that is on the line of two different grades, and also how grading company principles put their kids through Ivy League schools.
"I Can do it at $12,500.00, and I Got $12,300.00 in it" -Translation: I paid $5200.00 for it, finally got it bumped, and this'll be a nice score for me.
"Nice coin, Wrong Holder Though....Pass" -Translation: Most people I sell to are more concerned with the corporate logo on the holder than what's inside, so I'd have a hard time movin' it.
"Undergraded" -Translation: Any coin that PCGS has not received at least $200.00 in grading fees on.
"Gradeflation" -Translation: The necessary and arbitrary changing of grading standards to induce resubmissions.
Anyone have any others??

"PQ for the grade" - Nobody would ever believe it would upgrade to a 67, so let's just call it a really nice 66

"We pay more" = we pay as little as we can get away with
"PQ" = appropriately graded
"PQ+++" = appropriately graded, but I have to hype it to justify the price
"I don't know anything about coins" = I know enough to realize it's in my best interests to dummy up
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

"One of my best clients" - someone who steps up to the plate a lot.
BU = brilliantly uncirculated = I rescued it from circulation while it was still red!
UNC = uncirculated = I rescued it from circulation then dipped it.
GEM BU UNC = That's Bull.
My EBay Store/Auctions
"Would make a wonderful addition to your collection" -- Another common coin to add to your accumulation of cleaned, overgraded coins.
"G/VG" on eBay -- AU 3.5
"Borderline Uncirculated" in Coin World or Numismatic News -- XF-45 cleaned.
"Average Circulated" - AG if over 70 years old; bullion value if silver 40-70 years old.
"Commercial Unc." -- AU. However, this epithet implies questionable authenticity in the case of many pre-1933 raw U.S. gold coins.
"Certified" (in an eBay auction title, with no acronym) -- Used to mean slabbed by ACG; N"ow means slabbed by NTC, PCI, or the eBay seller.
"Novodel" -- Counterfeit
"Mottled golden toning" when describing an Unc. or PF Liberty Nickel usually means uneven, streaky, urine-colored toning."
"Original toning" often means that a coin was left inside of a toilet bowl for a few years. Or someone puked on the coin, forgot about it, and left it there until someone else found it a few years later..
'Monster' often - but not always - means "the coin is going to cost you more than I think it is worth."
'Interesting' usually means "we are not going to say anything about this coin that may be held against us later."
When the term '"good value" is used to describe a coin, it usually means that if the seller can unload it at the asking price, his kid's private school tuition is paid for the semester.

"Rainbow"-any type or "Color!" of toning, not necessarily the shape or color of a rainbow.
"Color!"-any size, shape or amount of unattractive toning, not necessarily colorful.
"Original"-not dipped, retoned, doctored, or improved so blatantly that a blind man couldn't spot it.
"Slider"- the silver dollar Hoss Cartright slid across the bar to the bartender.
"Dealer"-somebody that sells coins on "SleazeBay" but doesn't have a shop, business license or tax id.
"Wannabe dealer"-somebody that wants to sell coins on sleazeBay.
"Reputable dealer"-somebody that has no coins less then $25k or inventory less than $5 mil. Front man for rich coin owners.
"Newbie collector"-collector that has been collecting for a shorter time than the dealer talking.
"Old time collector" the widow in the Bible story that gave her last widow mites to the church. (Mark 12:41-44)
"Old time collection"-any collection a dealer has seen in his shop for the first time.
"Yahoo!"-what a cowboy yells when his horse is bucking.
"Well heeled collector"-rich coin owner
"SleazeBay"-Where "Newbie collector" buys his mintstate gems.
"Mint State"-a real shiny coin. Usually an AU-55/58.
"Gem"-a real shiny coin with just a little wear. Usually an AU-55/58.
"Set Registry"-where dealers get a Top Set pedigree to advertise coins they are selling.
"Undergraded"-any coin a dealer is selling. A panel of grading experts have assigned a wrong grade. Also called "PQ."
"Overgraded"-any coin a dealer is buying. A panel of grading experts have assigned a wrong grade. Also called "POS."
"PQ"-all coins owned by dealers.
"POS"-all coins owned by collectors.
"Restocking fee"-a penalty dealers charge to keep collector from returning over hyped junky POS "Sight-unseen' coins.
"Shipping fee"-how a "Sleazebay" dealer makes maoney.
"Sight unseen"- a coin on sleazeBay with a 15meg 50,000 x50,000 pixel macro picture.
"Sight seen"-somebody seen it in a dealer's case from several aisles over at a show & makes rave reviews on "Message board."
"Message board"-where "Newbie collector" gets flamed by "Reputable dealer" for being stupid & a waste of humanity.
"Done deal"- when a collector buys a POS he can't flip or upgrade & has to post it on "Message board" to get $$ back from unsavory scam dealer.

I'm too damn cheap & scared to pay market for it because I know my marketing & selling ability doesn't even rival a 6 year old selling lemonade so why take a chance losing even 1 penny of my money - hey I'm not REALLY in business anyway.
