Your opinion regarding this heavily toned Barber Half...

Take a look... It sure is dark:

MS64 Barber Half (dark)

Do you suppose that the coin is essentially a 65 that was bumped down for heavy toning? It's a scarce coin in 64 according to the population numbers, but unless it's a lot nicer in person, would you pay 64 money for it?

If you lighten the image - it becomes even uglier image

Looks like this coin was left on the floor of a vomitorium for a few decades. I'd send it back to PCGS re their downgrade guarantee; it's one of the ugliest Unc. Barber Halves I've ever seen, and most of them are pretty ugly to begin with.

And....I am being kind. If I owned it, I'd be embarrased to admit Iit.

That coin has loads of eye appeal..

    unfortunately, it's all negative!

edit: but we all know how bad Heritage scans are.. maybe it presents better in person?

Tough to judge from what I can see.

I agree with Baley and others.

In my opinion the toning on this coin makes it look unattractive, and I'd stay away from it because it's not the strong mint luster look that I typically like to see in coins (even on toned coins)...

Gee, how did I know it was going to be a Heritage auction before I clicked the link? image

They seem to have a large assortment of dark, dark coins. I don't know where they get them all.

This one is as ugly as the rest.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Yes...IMO the coin has 65 potential. Give it a good close-up...and the devices are pretty good. With that said.....that's one ugly voin.

NCS? I would like to see it in hand. I have a 1915D Barber half in NGC 63 and it looks dark purple with mediocre light......give her sunshine and wow its a beauty

I think from now on I'll let Elcontador write my coin bashing posts for me. That was horrible.
It sends shudders up my whole body to think there is a place where all hundreds of people do is puke on the floor to make a hot rancid layer of putrid greasy scum just to lay a coin in.
It doesn't surprise me, he was the originator of the numismatic term "body fluid tone"
I agree though. That thing is horrendously hideous, that's why it's in a cheap heritage internet auction.

I’ve seen worse. Looks fairly original to me.

I bet its better looking in person. Heritage images are often deceiving. Still, it would be a gamble...

Anytime you want me to write something trashing a butt-ugly coin, just send me a PM and consider it done (except in income tax season; I have to make a living).

But it's original. Shouldn't we pay a premium for originality?

The digital image of the coin is dark, but it would be best to view the coin in person in the correct light before making a final judgement on its eye appeal (as always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder). A few years ago I saw an 1893 barber half in PCGS 66 on the Heritage web site that looked way too dark for my liking. It was offered in many of their venues and never sold. Finally it showed up at an auction and I had a chance to view it. It turns out that it is a beautiful coin in person and I bought it and it sits proudly in my set. Most of my coins tend to be white or lightly toned, but I appreciate original toning, too.

Digital photography is a huge boon to numismatics, but some coins are very difficult to image. Getting the correct balance of color, sharpness, toning, and luster requires lots of skill and practice. My image-acquisition is still in need of improvement, but I'm getting better.
