Bodybagged: 1800/798 cent

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,626 ✭✭✭✭✭

I submitted this rather nice 1800/798 cent to PCGS for grading, but they "bagged" it for environmental damage. I think they were being tough on it, given that they sometimes tolerate a little porosity or verdigris on early copper. Note that this is the "injured reverse" variety, and the overall uneven, lumpy look of the reverse is due to the die. On the obverse, it might have a tiny rim clip or rim pinch at 9:00. What do you think.. should I re-submit it?

P.S., this was from the same collection as the 1794 I posted earlier.

  • Hi,

Ah come on now… for it’s age and rarity, that coin is rather sweet; I would have no problem adding that one to my collection.

You might want to re-send it or, perhaps, try the NGC or ANACS.

Either way, that is a nice example, not mint or awesome but, very nice!

    Have a good day now,

Why bother with any TPG? ANACS may be the only one with any semblance of accuracy or understanding of grading circ. early copper. 95% have to be net graded in some manner anyway.

That's a decent copper, btw. image

MacCrimmon is right. It's hard to find circulated coppers of this age that don't suffer from some degree of environmental damage.

These coins usually have to have some kind of net grading and ANACS is the obvious choice.

Hey, I'll bet some dealers around here could get it into a VF35 slab on the first try..... image

ANACS is the best way to go for early copper, IMO.

ANACS gets 75% of my coins excluding Morgan's where they get 100% of mine. I would put that beauty in an ANACS slab and let it stay there.

A little porosity?? I've seen chain cents holdered by PCGS with MAJOR porosity, as well as a wide range range of other problems.

PCGS allows latitude on all 1793 coppers. They normally would not bag a 1793.

  • Are you selling the coin? If not... why slab it? Unless you're gonna be selling it, I would keep it raw, and enjoy it like it is image If you're selling it, go for ANACS... If you're doing it for protection... get an Interrupt Shield Holder for it...

First choice, as others have said, leave it unslabbed. I wouldn't send it back to PCGS. Why be part of their "here's another sucker that will just keep sending us $30 for the same coin, for nothing" business plan.
  • That is a nice S-191. I wouldn't bother sending it in. If you ever wanted to sell it you should have no problem doing so If it is in my price range I would love having it. It is just an attractive coin.) The surfaces don't look bad, but I can't tell what the color is like. But I can't see why it should have been BB. I've seen a lot worse in slabs.
