Ditto. For grading, I use a 100 watt with the ceiling lights off. For viewing at their prettiest, flourescent lights.

what are you interested in the "lamp" doing?? for grading a halogen is good cause the light is harder, penetrates the surface better and seems to reveal stuff like hairlines and minute scratches. standard incandescent bulbs are OK but some will show color that isn't really there. to make coins look their prettiest a flourescent can't be beat, but the light is so weak that coins invariably look better than they really are. i like to look at coins in bright sunlight for the best combination of the halogen/flourescent effects, but you have to remember that i live on the shores of Lake Erie, so those moments can be as scarce as a Full Step Jefferson!!!

as i've said in the past, if i could strap my lights on my back and head off to a show, i'd leave my magnifiers at home!!

  • I want to get a true look at my coins. I have tried different lights and I still don't know which is best. I purchased a Bell & Howell Natural lighting lamp for this. It seems too bright to me.
