Hi,
This might be a stupid question or perhaps this is slang, but what is it?

    Never heard of it.

Maybe 'cause I'm an impoverished part-time coin dealer, not a rich, orgy-prone one.

this is what they look like. All those censored videos on TV come from the trade and grades.

Here are some secret images shot by an undercover collector posing as a rich dealer:

Skier07, your question was certainly not a stupid one.

"Trade N Grade", while not nearly as exciting as you might have been led to believe from previous replies to this thread image.......refers to small (approximately 20 dealers in attendance) dealer-only shows sponsored by NGC and held in Vegas approximately 5 times per year.

It is an opportunity for the dealers to conduct wholesale-only business and to submit coins to NGC for on-site grading.
  • Helpful link although there will be some of the same old replies in this thread also.

  • coinguy1, doesn't PCGS hold some too? I thought the last one wqas held jointly by NGC and PCGS.

    Thanks,

In order to try to avoid any confusion on this topic - PCGS holds their own version, also in Vegas and approximately 4 or 5 times per year. It is called the "PCGS Invitational".

Below is a link to a PCGS article about the April 2004 event - invited dealers and registry set owners are allowed to attend these. PCGS does a wonderful job for the dealers and non-dealer attendees.

    Hi,
From a layperson this stinks. Do the boys get together in Vegas with the preconceived notion of automatically getting upgrades especially if they crossover? Does anyone know what percentage of coins successfully upgrade? Do the boys meet at Cheetah's or the Crazyhorse II for a few lap dances with the finalizer and
charter a helicopter to the chicken ranch?

    Bruce
RSVP me for the next event

In answer to all three questions - no.

Sounds like TRADE AND BRIBE would be more aptly named. Why else would a dealer go to a "special" show with the word TRADE as a headlight?? Isn't ALL grading the same, show, or in house? Are the lights better in Vegas?? Many questions, many unanswered. Hmmmmmmm..image

You guys can speculate all you care to about conspiracies, etc.

Many dealers, whether they do little, mostly or exclusively wholesale sales, enjoy being able to transact business with a small, well-known group of fellow dealers. For example, I might do 80 % of my wholesale business with 20 dealers combined, many of whom are in attendance at these shows.

These gatherings can be highly efficient, relaxing and fun. Plus, dealers can leave the shows as early as they please and not receive too much grief for it, since there is no public there to be disappointed by a near empty bourseimage

    Bingo! image

I know I had a great time at the last event. image

edited to add, lest my wife ever see this thread, that the great time was at the blackjack and poker tables - not a toga party!

Hey Mark, believe it our not there are a lot of "ostritch" collectors, myself included, who don't want to believe that there is a wholesale market and a retail market. But the idea that a special GRADING show is held for dealers has a smell to it. Grading is supposed to be uniform at all times...and no special event should be held for dealers only without expecting some eyebrows to rise. I do not believ in the conspiracies that many do, but I just think the concept is bad.

The mere thought of Laura in a toga ends all speculation about whether such an event occurs....

Since an orgy is a sex party, and since I followed up with pictures of drunks in togas, and since clearly that isn't really what a trade and grade is, uh duh, yeah it was a joke. Are you really that clueless?

Agree with Mr Feld except the last T&G was about 35 dealers; haven't been to a PCGS Invitational yet.

Oh I don't think I'm clueless. when you said it was an orgy for "RICH COIN DEALERS" that smacked of resentment. Funny thing is I actually agreed, but youu seem to be picking at something. So let's be nice and put it to sleep.image

Many years ago, in the last great bull market (actually at the end of it) Roger Bryan put on a show called the "Bull 100". This is the same concept, but with the wide spread prevalence of 3rd party grading, it's logical that would be part of the equation. No monkey business, just a more exclusive show, by invitation.

I enjoyed the couple of toga parties I've been to. One time, I got laid! that was fun.

  • There is a lot more to it then a bunch of dealers trying to upgrade coins, they have other activities as well.
