Tips on getting closer to coins to photograph them?

Hello,

Could anyone toss a few tips on getting closer to the coins, in order to have a larger, better image?

Aside from purchasing a second digital camera with good macro capabilities... what are the options for an SLR photographer?

Is anyone using extension tubes successfully or a specific macro lens?

I have a Canon Digital Rebel; photos below are the best I can get and as close as I can get.

Thanks in advance,
Anthony

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

A 100 mm macro lens is the best choice for most coins. That will allow you to fill the screen with a trime from 6 inches away. A macro lens can be had for between $100 and $500. the cheap ones perform quite well. i know someone using a $100 one that works quite well. Better lighting can be had with the camera farther away and the 100mm lens allows that.

Agree with Mgoodm3. You can get too close and interfere with proper lighting. A macro lense that allows you to zoom is the best combo.
