Submitting Complete Mint/Proof Sets For Grading?

I have some nice Mint and Proof Sets that I am considering sending in to PCGS for Grading. I want to send the complete set. Can I submit them complete to PCGS still in the Packaging from the Mint? It seems like this would be acceptable. Less chance of any fingerprints, etc. on the coins? Thanks for your thoughts, Lee

  • They must be submitted in their own individual flips. Yes it would seem less chance of fingerprints but that would mean PCGS would still have to crack open the proof set for you and take them out causing more risk of damage to the coins.

Yes you can, but the entire set has to be graded.

  • Cracking open proof sets is easy. I work the paper-thin blade of a box cutter into the seam of the corner of the holder and gently pry it open. Works every time. Before you crack open a set, examine each and every coins for nicks, haze, spots, ticks, and other imperfections. Before I knew what I was doing, I was unaware of a noticeable "tick" on a NY silver state quarter. It came back PR65DCAM. A waste of $12. Live and learn.

Wrong answer. See Yousri's post for the correct response.

I send them in all the time in the mint Plastic Don't have to be Flip's but whole set has to be graded
The only drawback is it will take a week for them to post coins
Someone has to open them at PCGSimage

For recent ones it is, just twist it and insert a screwdriver along the seam and lift.

Ones from the 1970's are the hardest, because each coin is in a grooved slot that doesn't always peel apart.

PCGS uses a saw to cut them open. And yes, it you have the complete set graded PCGS will remove them from the set.
