1883-84CC Uncircs

Hello again from the newbie.
I seemed to have alot of the "re-released" Carson City 1883 and 84 Morgans still in the Carson City Mint plastic cases with some note about them having survived the massive silver melt downs of the early 1900's and having been found in 1964 by a Treasury audit. I'll post some pics if that will help. Just looking for info at this point. Thanks.

Those are referred to as GSA (General Services Administration) CC dollars. They were sold by the govt. to the public via auction in the '70's. The 1882-CC, 1883-CC, and 1884-CC are the 3 most common dates and still exist by the 10's of 1000's in the GSA plastic holders. They can be worth anywhere from 160.00 or so all the way up to the multi thousands depending on their date and grade.

A typical 1883-CC or 1884-CC is usually worth less than 200.00 dollars.

Here, by date, is a list of the total number of GSA Black Box CC Morgans which were available for sale back in the 70s (numbers include both circ and unc):

    Year Total
    1878-CC 60,993
    1879-CC 4,123
    1880-CC 131,529
    1881-CC 147,485
    1882-CC 605,029
    1883-CC 755,518
    1884-CC 962,638
    1885-CC 148,285
    1889-CC 1
    1890-CC 3,949
    1891-CC 5,687
    1892-CC 1
    1893-CC 1

P.S. Don't break them out of the GSA holders.

Keep posting pics, everyone likes looking at new coins, and I'll also give you a very good idea of what they're worth.

I bought 12 of these from the original GSA sale. Most of them were very low end Uncs., with lots of bag marks. I cracked out the nicest of them ; 2 graded MS 65 & 1 graded MS 66. I only have the latter now.

I wouldn't crack anything out of the boxes now. Send pics first. Lots of people on this form have a good eye re Morgans.

I agree. Once upon a time, people used to crack these out to submit for grading. But now many collectors are putting a premium on the GSA holders, *and* they can be graded by some services -- I know NGC does it now, for example.
