How do you feel about coin shows that do not allow licensed citizens to conceal carry

I spoke with the promoter of the Sarasota Coin Show listed in Coin World for Oct. 29-31. Frank Cox. ,phone number: 941-954-0202., listed in Coin World. He said that he does not permit licensed concealed carry permit holders to bring firearms to the show. They do searches and probably frisk you at the door. I told him he was a communist and hung up on him. , prior to that I told him I would make it a point to tell everybody that he does not permit lawful citizens to defend themselves agaist potential muggings and attacks.
How many of you dealers and collectors feel safe traveling with thousands of dollars worth of coins?. In this day and age, if you feel lucky, then go for it. As a former victim of a violent crime that almost killed me., I wish you all the luck in the world. I prefer FBI statistics to guide my travels.

Certainly you have seen many other places with a similiar situation.
Your concealed carry license does not mean you can walk around all over the U.S. and go into any establishment you want with a firearm. Try going to some nightclubs in Washington DC (or most any city) with your firearm and a license and see what they tell you. Same thing.

The promoter is entitled to make that choice much like a grocer, or store owner, etc......(Liquor establishments are a No No countrywide as far as I know) BUT it makes me wonder Why some of these people do not permit firearms carried legally on LAW ABIDING citizens.
What if some crook sneaks a gun into a show or walks into a grocery store that refuses to allow guns and proceeds to rob it or someone inside???
My point is, rules such as that only hurt people that obey law. You can make all the rules and laws you want governing all types of guns and situations but you will NEVER control criminals and the way that they obtain and use guns.
I personally will not boycott anyplace for such a thing but do feel that if people put a bit more thought into the subject that they might reconsider and permit guns.
I would have to suspect that the promoter of that show has basically no knowledge of firearms, firearms laws, and/or criminal activity. That or he/she is scared of having some "Clint Eastwood" type at the show ready to draw down on someone at the blink of an eye.
I'll be the first to admit that here in Ohio the test and background that a civilian must pass in order to carry conceal is somewhat of a joke but I think the good of carrying outweighs the bad.
Brian....Do you have a file on him now?
I like to shoot weekly but I will tell the story of 1 dealer whom I invited to my club to shoot because I did not think he had fired his weapon in a few years....turns out he did not fire it in almost 6 years....hey it only jammed twice on him that afternoon....needless to say, I convinced him to choose a different pistol that was a tad more suited to him.......

they don't call them the CRIMINOLES for nothing!
i kind of think that your reaction to the show promoter was a bit more irrational than his refusal to allow firearms in his show. look at it another way-------you condemn his rightful excercise of his rights which you perceive as denying you your rights. is that sensible?? add to that the attitude of "I'll show you, I'll hurt me" by refusing to attend the show.
methinks you have overreacted a bit. i fail to see the link between his refusal and being a communist. can you please clarify that for me??
thanks.

Plus the building owners where the show is to be held may be more against it than the promoter.
Then there are state, county and city laws and or ordinaces that you have to contend with.
The criminal has all the rights, you shoot a criminal and it may be within your rights to do so, but it still won't stop the multi-million dollar lawsuits, against
everyone involved. Heaven forbid if a innocent gets caught in the middle.
Honestly, as a consumer in the crowd peering at dimes - a heck of a lot less likely to get shot. My humble .02

I have recently "heard" that in some states property owners can't simply say you can't carry on their property. It must be posted in
specific terms for it to be a valid enforceable request. Anyone else ever hear of this? I think Texas may be one of those states?
Anyway, I would boycott such a show. How stupid could they possibly be? Going in & out of a coin show exposes you to a higher risk of
being robbed- A fact I'm sure we all agree upon. So why would some stooge want people that are higher than normal risks to be MORE
vunerable? Some people need to see beyond the liberal "soccer mom" smoke screen.

I'm fine with it. It's a private coin show, pal. If he wants you to wear a size 8 pink dress in order to get in, he can do that too. He has rights, just like you do. Last I checked, America was still in business!
You did the right thing, you took your business elsewhere.
BTW, calling him a “communist” seems a bit extreme......did he call you a Right-Wing Wacko first?

Yep - the framers clearly meant everyone has an absolute Constitutional Right to take a gun to a coin show.

Yes, Texas allows pretty much anyone to carry a concealed weapon and it has to be posted on private property that is open to the public that the owner doesn't allow it, so you see those (/) gun signs most everywhere. What's funny is that it's even posted at the Airport

What does someone's views on guns have to do with being a communist?

And you call "him" a communist.

You can always give your gun to one of the smokers outside for safe keeping, while you go inside

If you feel strongly in this regard, don't attend the show.. you made the right choice. However, there are generic suggestions which might make you feel comfortable at shows where you can't carry a personal firearm with you on site. Consider parking close to the entrance if possible. Keep your handgun locked in your vehicle. Leave the show with several friends or with a group of people.. thieves are less likely to attack you in a crowded parking lot close to the entrance. More likely, a theif would try and follow you to a less conspicous location, in which you would have the firearm with you in the car for your protection.

No offense (at all, and I am sorry you were the victim of a crime), but isn't that like asking how many of us are unbiased regarding the issue?

More than once.
How did the topic of guns come up in your call?
Did you ask or did he bring it up?
If the business post a no carry sign you must honor it.
Some law inforcement and others boycott these places.
I don't ask but will honor there right to post the sign.
Insurance companys have a real problem with this issue.
It's big bucks. Just my take on this.
it's why God made ankle holsters
Its a matter of principal now., and you are taking a big risk, they can escort you out at their leisure.
I never cared for ankle holsters, I prefer inner pocket and belt holsters.

At coin show......ONE......time, I had a suspicious "follower" on the bourse.
He changed direction every time I did and only looked at me.....not any coins.
I.......illegally.......allowed my jacket to flop while he was looking and he saw my gun.
He skedaddled.
My greatest concern is ....leaving....the show. Parking garages make me jumpy.
I go through a parking garage like a freeking ninja. Never close to a pole and watching....through.... car windows for anyone.
I will carry to all shows.
If challenged, I will let every dealer know that I will not be viewing their stuff. Create a scene if necessary.
I qualify yearly and take the "legal update" every 3 years as required.
My gun goes wherever I want except the prohibited places printed on the license. Which are schools and bars.
Edited to add that in my opinion, a gun in a briefcase is worse than no gun because that briefcase is what they're gonna grab. THEN you get the liability of not controlling your gun.

Very well said.
What matters to me is what the law says.
Mine says:
<<<Your license does not authorize you to carry a pistol into any establishment that serves alcohol or to be in possession of a pistol while consuming alcohol.
Your license does not authorize you to carry a pistol inside an airport, courthouse or any other public building that specifically prohibits firearms. This includes city, state, and federal facilities.
Your license does not authorize you to carry a pistol at any public gathering such as sporting events, political events, parades, etc. (Title 13A-11-59)>>>
Which really doesn't make much sense because those places have the greatest danger of being a victim of violent crime.
