Got home late last night and decided to unwind in front of the tube before going to sleep. Clicked to the home shopping channels only to find Coin Vault in full swing. The can't miss, super rare numismatic product de jure was proof sets (and after the proof set pitch, mint sets were next, but I could not stay up for that part of the program).
Barker/hawker extraordinaire Robert Chambers and his sidekick (both make me think "What a waste of skin") could not contain themselves. In the throes of their sales pitch, both probably had simultaneous CO's.
The product line for sale was broader in scope that the usual 1960-2004 run of proof sets. They actually had proof sets from 1936 forward. I was sleepy but the pricing I think I saw was:
1. 1960-2004 run of proof sets - $1,499.95;
2. 1955-1959 - $699.95 (or maybe $599.95);
3. 1954 - $299.95;
4. 1953 - $599.95;
5. 1952 - $599.95;
6. 1951 - $999.95;
7. 1950 - $999.95;
8. 1942 (6 coin) - $2,199.95;
9. 1941 - $2,199.95; and
10. 1940 - $2,199.95.
They also had on display a 1939 and a 1938, however, missed the pricing on these two sets. They also said that they had had a 1937 set and a 1936 set, and made a comment about the 1936 set being $13,000.00 (I do not know if that was their price for a 1936 set or if it was for something else). All sets that I saw from 1938 through 1954 were in either Capital holders or Whitman holders. You could not tell what the coins actually looked like. I suspect that most if not all of the coins are low quality.
The show made me want to call and ask them what they would pay to purchase sets from 1936 through 1954. However, I can imagine that somewhere in TV land their are people who bought into the hype and phoned in to buy these overpriced sets.
Did anyone see this show and if so, what thoughts, comments do you have? Further, does nayone know any person who has purchased coins from the Coin Vault (if so what was their reaction upon finding out that they overpaid)? Further, does anyone know any person who has sold coins to the Coin Vault (if so what was sold and what was paid by the Coin Vault)?

more than a knowledgeable collector would pay, it's less than double of normal re-
tail and it's less than you'd pay buying from many of the on line coin dealers. They
didn't do their normal hype for these coins though, which I kind of missed .
This is the first time they've offered the mint sets in a long time (SAH doesn't even have
themon the web site anymore). Perhaps their heart wasn't in it.
I wonder how many of their proof sets in Capitol holders are really business strikes

edit to add: Sorry, wrong thread. That was someone else.
Maybe they need some competition - someone with some integrity.

they mentioned the 1936 proof set last week as part of the mint set spiel, going for for $13000, but it only lists at ~$6000 or so in my redbook. the redbook is my only access to prices so i use it as a guide. coin vault is full of runny puppy poo.
but i still watch it.cuz it's funny
