NGC "I like Ike" program

Has anyone used the new NGC offering in which they will grade Brown Box Ikes in the holder, like they do with the GSA Morgans? What would keep me from doing it is that the Brown Ikes tend to haze, so you might be better off in the long run cracking the coin out.

What are your thoughts??

  • I'd crack em and send em in. I have several brown box Ikes that are untouched and they are all developing an ugly brown toning to one degree or another. I've cracked out a few and dipped them and put them in 2x2s, but I left some in the original boxes to see how bad they would get and they're pretty disgusting right now. If they were toning rainbow-like, I'd consider keeping them in the original plastic, but they're not. They're just ugly.

  • I can understand the novelty and populartiy of grading still in the GSA boxes..but otherwise..grading through a mint package may seriously impair the accuracy of the grades. I'm sure the Ikes wouldn't/don't carry much of a premium still in like boxes like the GSA's do....Even trying to grade through a mint cello is impossible........i just don't think this method is acurate at all......IMHO

  • I don't even see why the GSA holders carry any special premium. A GSA CC dollar shouldn't be worth any more than a raw CC dollar. In fact, I have seen some GSA dollars that were a lot uglier than some of the raws I have seen. Should they still carry a premium for the plastic??

This is my only NGC graded coin. I think it's pretty neat.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • Cracked all 15 of my ugly tarnished Ikes out of the brown box and dipped them all. Now I like the coins. Sent in what I thought were the best 5 to NGC and now I love my Ikes.

It was either that or throw them away. I hated how they looked in the original holder.

The GSA's are like any other pedigree. would you pay a premium for an Elizaberg(spelling??) It's just knowing where the coins have been and the role they've played in history which i believe deserves a premium..

  • Well, this whole hazing problem might eventually make Ikes still in the gov't holders, without haze, and NGC 68 UCAM or better scarce and desirable. The trick is to keep the Ikes from hazing going forward. image

Hey Ike Specialists (i.e. Frattlaw and Braddick), what's your take on this??

Why?? What makes the plastic so special?? The GSA is just the governments surplus liquidator. They don't grade coins or do anything special to them except pass them along to the consumer. Their plastic is meaningless.

I agree with Coinhusker1.....If you can find one WITHOUT any haze or toning that
is still in the plastic and looks "freshly-minted", then I think it would bring a premium
    (especially a 74-S!)

Its a nice concept but these are plentiful and I wouldn't spend the money to have them graded. I have a couple that are in the process of turning gold and blue and hazing over.

Got any GSA dollars in their worthless plastic for sale? Have you ever bought/sold them? Do you know this market in regards to original holders for GSA dollars?
