Using Used Flips For PCGS Submissions?

Is it okay to use used/old flips for PCGS submissions? I guess I'm wondering if coins that were previously in a flip leave contaminants behind that could affect the grade of another coin.

Comments

  • It could depending upon how much the flip was used. I suggest getting some new flips for the submission and don't risk a lower grade over a 2 cent flip.

Write to ICG and request a submission packet. They'll assign you a submittor number and send you some forms and a bunch of nice 2.5x2.5 mylar flips. Toss the submission forms, keep the flips. I bought a VHS for my library "How to grade mint state coins" from them and they assumed I wanted this stuff so they sent it to me. Yay, I'm now in the ICG club and I have my own number. Maybe someday I'll send them something just for S's and G's.
  • Robert,

The flips that ICG sends you, are they the safe ones without PVC that PCGS recommended to use a few weeks back?

If the coin is uncirculated, you can use the other side of the flip if it is unused. When the flips become too brittle the coin can rip out thru a seam and become scratched.
  • You can't use PVC anymore, or your submission will be rejected. I bought a box of Saflips for the submissions I'll be doing soon because I don't know the history of the flips that some of the coins I have came in.

  • how can you tell the difference b/t pvc and nonpvc flips?

The PVC flips will bend easily, while non-PVC flips won't, and are more brittle.
  • Correct. Most of my older flips are soft and pliable, so they are likely to have at least some PVC in them. Saflips feel like they could split or crack at any moment, but they seem to be holding up so far with no problems.

  • You can easily use the unused half of a flip to send coins in.
But if it is a proof or really nice rare coin, I would always use a fresh new flip from the middle of the package of flips.
Don't let dust or other contaminants get in/on the flips.
Little tiny dust particles or other things can get imbedded in the plastic and cause nasty tiny scratches on the coin.
Thus you do not want to "slide" the coin right in, try to get the flip to bulge out nicely, and carefullyslip the coin in so it doesn't touch the
sthe front and back of the coin too much. Plus you want to try and do this without breathing on the coin, nor touching it on anything but the
    rim too.
Also don't touch the inside of the flips with your hands, as the fingers leave fingerprints (oils) which could get on the coin too.
Somehow you have to figure out how to do all this with only two hands too.image

  • It's not easy cupping the mylar flips. They tend to stick shut.

  • Always use new flips. I am going to make it my crusade to teach and reach out to the numismatic community that new flips should always be used in submissions to the grading services!
  • Will PCGS send you more flips on request?

They'll sell them to you on request. They'll also sell you sticker rolls.

You have to pay for them.
