<< <i> If this coin had remained undisturbed for another twenty or so year, the obverse would have turned the color of my 87 pair. >>
Perhaps... but don't let the appearance of the dark fields mis-lead you. The obverse is very proof-like, with a nice cameo and with just a slight tilt those obverse colors (and the field) brighten up and the mirrors light up the colors. >>
I understand that, but those deep blues and purples are the last colors before going black.
Excellent, thank you. That is a one in a million coin, that would have been a crescent except the bag was moved or nudged a couple of times, and the toning took place in a circular fashion. Once again, a very definitive delineation between the toned and untoned parts of the obverse with the brownish band.

Hey that's what's wrong here. It's just too pleasant in this thread >>
How refreshing!
I would hazard a guess that a study of toned GSA dollars would yield interesting results, as they should largely be "unmessed with" and are documented to have spent decades in mint bags.
<< <i>Thanks Kyle. I am looking to see if anyone can see what all these coins have in common. What they have in common is something that tells you these are NT coins that came out of a bag. If no one gets it, I'll explain later. >>
it's blatatantly obvious - they're all slabed. that automatically makes em mtk-acceptable.
Great pics and expanation, thanks. It raises a further question for me, why does the toning then go to blue, red, or green instead of staying yellow-brown or golden. It also seems there is no regularity to the order of the following colors, is there a reason for that also? Thanks again.

So...somebody explain this one. I'm absolutely 100% beyond any shadow of a doubt it's original, natural, and market acceptable genuine Mint sack toning and can prove it. I just can't splain it how it happened.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Possibly moisture/liquid on the mint bag sometime durring storage...
Hey Dog, I can "splain" it. You were out drinking that Mad Dog 20/20 again and when the night was over.... well never mind. I believe many of these Gsa's the bag did indeed get wet or damp... hence some of the "Not so pretty" tone. I can't prove that though. As far as Market acceptable, even though it's in a Gsa holder I guess they could still no grade it. Some of the Binions they did this IMO for being "not so pretty." Some were environmental damage.
So I think your coin is either an AT experiment gone bad, or a "not so pretty" GSA. Having said all this I believe I tried buying this baby off you a long time ago.

This is a great thread! I have bought all of my nice looking toned coins raw and never (yet) gotten a bb for AT. The key is to look at lots of NT coins and understand what they look like, when you see AT it will just stand out and not look right.
BTW - I am color blind and I think that is really as asset to me. I don't appreciate the colors like you folks do, but I place more weight on the pattern and the way the toning sits on the coin. I appreciate a monster NT coin as much as the next guy, but for different reasons I guess.

I know that was a tough one I posted but only 2 people felt qualified to explain it? Where did all the experts go? OK, I'll buy the moisture part and it was clearly in the fold of a bag cause you can see the fold line across it and since the blue & purple splotches from the wet bag are in neat little rows from the bag cloth weave that makes it a textile toned Carson City GSA Morgan. And every time stman & gsaguy tried to buy it from me they told me it was an ugly worthless POS.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I thought that was neat when you posted it several months ago.
Cool coin Kyle, how is the luster and colors and is it for sale?

Now you need to do a post on using the 4300 to get this kind of pictures.

Hate to burst your bubble Karl, but this thread has nothing to do about slabs. As a matter of fact, I bought most of those coins raw.
