Just the other day I got a 2004 Keel Boat Nickel off eBay in a PCGS MS66 holder. It's a no-brainer 67 and I think on a good day it could
go 68. It really is that good. I think that they probably have a big surge of the nickels going through at PCGS & it just got rushed through.

Three years ago, I saw a 1796 Half Cent With Pole slabbed as an AU by one of the majors which was a weak VF.

  • I've seen a few memorial cents in pcgs ms66 holders that should be in ms63 or ms64 holders at best. For undergraded my 1909-s or 1910-s cents are pcgs ms64 but have to be lock ms65's on regrade. I've heard of many people upgrading these two particular dates (and 09-s vdb), so I wonder if there is reason they used to be more strict with these really early Lincolns.

  • About 2 months ago I was talking with a guy at a local coin show. He had a 1902-O Barber Half in a PCGS VF25 slab... one of the new blue ticket slabs. Anyone who knows the Barber Half series knows that the 1902-O is the single weakest strike date in the entire series. Well, the coin in that VF25 slab was an extremely weakly struck example of that date. I can see how a complete novice at coin grading might think that it was a VF25 coin based solely on the apparent lack of detail. However, anybody with any semblance of experience with this series should know that VF25 coins do not have abundant luster. This coin easily had the luster of an AU55 coin. I'm as serious as a heart attack. The luster was booming, beaming, blasting from the surface in luscious cartwheels. Even with the horribly weak strike, the coin could not have net graded any lower than XF40. It was blatantly obvious that whoever graded this at PCGS is about as stupid as they come. And they're getting paid to be this inept???

Note to HRH: Hire ME to grade your Barber material. At least then it will be graded correctly. Duh!

This was absolutely the single greatest misgrading of a slabbed coin I have ever seen. This was worse than anything I've seen from ACG, and that's saying a lot.

i've seen colonials/early coppers be overgraded by 20 points EASILY.

i've also seen coins undergraded by at least 10 points, say vf-30 on an xf coin.

typically, i think pcgs & ngc grade w/in about 3 points of reality, & much more often then not, i agree w/ their grades.

but for early copper, the rule is that they seldom grade coins properly imo. they're almost guaranteed to overgrade copper by at least 5 points, & colonials by at least 10 points.
