Which coin would you rather have, for $75,000?

I appreciate that we all have a different view of very desirable coins we could dream about owning. Let's assume that each of the following coins are for sale, not auction, and that the purchase price is $75,000 (shipping included). You have $75,000 to spend, or several coins that equal $75,000 in trade that the seller is willing to accept.

Additionally, each coin is pq for grade, and is either originally toned or blast white, Ultra Cameo if a proof. Which coin would you buy and why.

1. 1901-S Barber quarter, MS 66 NGC
2. 1904-S Barber half, MS 66 PCGS
3. 1893-S Morgan dollar MS 63, NGC
4. 1921-S Walking Liberty Half, MS 65, PCGS
5. 1800 $10 gold, MS 64, PCGS
6. 1909-S Lincoln cent, MS 68, PCGS
7. 1895 Barber Half, Pr 69, NGC
8. 1892 $20 gold, Pr 65, NGC
9. 1815/2 Bust half, MS 65, NGC
10. 1803/2 $5 gold, MS 65, NGC
11. 1861 $2 1/2 gold, MS 65, PCGS
12. 1804 bust quarter, MS 64, PCGS

If there are any of the above coins you own, tell us about it.

  • Myself? I would take the $75k and pay my mortgage off.

Or buy the 1803/2 as I love error coins and gold!!!!! Best of both worlds.....then live out of my truck.....

I'd probably take the 1800 eagle. Nice, big, early gold. Mmmmm.... I suppose an pre-1800 date would be a little more than 75K?

What's with the 1861 quarter eagle at 75K???

    That would be awsome!

I would take the 1800 Eagle. Does one exist in MS-64?

Or buy the 1803/2 as I love error coins and gold!!!!!

I would not consider this an error coin. It is the only variety for the issue.

    Edited to add "why":

The draped bust right design is my favorite US coin design, and I "need" an eagle for my US gold type set. I just was not planning to spend $75,000 for one!

Dale: Of the coins that you mentioned I'd select the:
      1800 $10 gold, MS 64, PCGS
However, if allowed to make a different choice, I'd select either a really choice 1795 Flowing Hair or a Draped Bust (Small Eagle) Dollar. Although I'm a Silver Dollar Collector, and the 1893-S is the King of the Morgans, I'd prefer to purchase either a classic Flowing Hair or Draped Bust Dollar in that high price range.

I thought that it was interesting that you did not include either of those two other Silver Dollars in your options... Was this on purpose or just by chance??

Mr Eureka found the slider in the group and has earned a prize for his "good eye".

Congratulations for being careful about what you would part with, especially if it is $75,000.

    Stuart,

Had I included the early dollars in the $75,000 list, I am almost certain everyone would make that choice. These coins are so hot, that a MS 63 1795 draped bust herardic eagle, or a MS 62 Flowing Hair would have run away with the first pick.

And good hunting to you, I saw your post and a 1795 FH in PCGS 55-58 will be a great addition to your type set.

if i absolutely HAD to choose, i'd pick the 1893-s because i think it could be dumped the quickest, which is what i'd do. i'd rather have $75K cash then any of those coins.

If I had to choose one of these, it would be the 1804 quarter without a doubt. High grade, super date, very historical. To me it has all the great things a coin should have.

Hmm, just yesterday I mentioned the virtues of the 1909-S cent in condition rarity mint state as one of the most underpriced dates.

I must agree with Stew. But now that I see that he is onto my little secret it is no longer underpriced as Stew will make sure no one gets one cheap while he is napping!image

If the 1893-s $ were nice and original and un-dipped as you say, then I would choose it first, then I would go with the 21-s WLH second if blast white and struck well.

The only reason I didnt choose the gold as I dont collect gold?

I'd go for the 1892 $20 if it's as nice as you say.

As usual high grade small cents get no respect in this forum. If PCGS graded a 1909-S 68RD I'd love to see it, let alone own it.

Right on Shylock! For my money I'd buy a 1877 IHC MS66R, a 1888/7 in 64RB or a 1864 c/L Proof. On the other hand, if RickKay would sell me the copper schoolgirl in 68R....imageimage

Stewart, and the other small cents enthusiasts:

I apologize for not including any coins from the series you guys love, other than one that does not exist. But I am on the lookout for the MS 68 red 1909-S cent. It appears to have the greatest upside over $75,000.

The 1800 $10 appears to be the favorite in this group. Thanks for all the responses and thoughts re a nice dream.

    Dale,

I'll chime in with the NGC 66- 1901-S Barber quarter with the PCGS 64 - 1804 Bust quarter a close second.

Reason being: I need the 01-S to complete my set and I have lusted after the 1804 quarter since I started collecting.

You offered some very tough choices ... and they are all great coins.

Well that 93-s Morgie in 63 would nicely upgrade my Morgan set; esp if it would crossover. As popular as the series is there just aren't THAT many opportunities to own a nice MS example.
    theknowitalltroll;
  • Although the 1893-S Morgan would be tempting, I'd go with the 1800 $10 gold, MS 64, PCGS. This would be a nice piece of history from when the mint first started striking coins, and a gold one to boot.

  • Of COURSE the 1909-s in 68RD would be a big upswing coin. BUT IT DOESNT EXIST. What PCGS SHOULD do for the heck of it, is buy a 67RD for itself (Hall), and regrade it to a 68RD, and see what fool would pay the most, just for the holder. A true 68 should not exist after almost 100 years have gone by...

I think that the 1804 Bust Quarter would be fun. The mintage was low, and the coins were generally well struck, which one cannot say for the 1806 and '07 coins of this type.

I've seen so many examples of this coin, that I don't think that it is a great rarity overall. But it is interesting AND it sort of like a miniature 1804 silver dollar. image

  • 1804 quarter

Why? Well I like the early coins, but I don't really care for gold so that left me with the 1815 half and the 1804 quarter. Both are the key date or their series but I like smaller denominations better than the larger ones so I went for the quarter. Besides he 1815 half is widely recognized as the a key, but the quarter is not as well known.

I wouldn't spend $75,000 on any coin. If I had to pick one from the list it would be the 1893-S Morgan simply because it would be the most marketable.
