I don't collect Dark Side coins, but it looks like a British Penny.

I believe that's exactly what it is, and I'm not sure of the value, but probably not very much due to the damage.

  • It is a British penny. They were as large as the US silver dollar and are pretty common in lower grades even today. This one is damaged also.

I lifted this image from a Russian numismatic website where it is referred to as a British "cartwheel" penny.

  • In this condition it's worth about $2.

Now I know where Gobrecht ripped off the design for the Seated Liberty coinage. image
  • Thanks Guys! I appreciate it!

  • I agree. The image of Britannia seated, had to be strong on Gobrechts mind when he was working on his own designs.

  • What does it weigh? If it is one oz then it is a penny. If it is silver dollar sized like Cameron said and weighs two oz then it is a two pence. They were a private contract coinage struck for the Crown by Matthew Boulton at the SoHo mint. They were the first official steam press coinage struck for England.

This coin is very cool. I thought I would just point that out.
  • Hi,
when researching before the purchase of my Proof Seated Dime I read that Gobrecht was influenced by these designs.

    Hey Ken,

That would make a cool pocket piece!

    This one is damaged also.

How nice of you to notice Cam, I don't think any of us caught that. image
