Hard to say from just a picture but it does appear it would be a 65. But I'd have to be able to judge all the attributes in hand and not by picture.

Looks like she lost the knife fight.
  • Compare it to the lower grades...that are on ebay and you will see...I have no faith in the plastic companies.
  • Yeah the reverse has some nice marks also....that guy had better send that coin in for a regrade.
  • I would grade that no better than a 63.
  • One cannot possibly know if it is overgraded or not by a digital photograph. The lighting and the angle make tiny cuts look like deep valleys. You have to hold the coin in person to grade the coin. Otherwise, PCGS could just let you submit a digital photo and then they could grade by computer. JMHO.

Pretty nasty cheek gouge for a 66, even a 65.

Those nicks on the cheek are prominent and distracting enough to preclude a 66, IMO almost no matter *what* the rest of the coin looks like. If the rest of the coin were MS-69+, then maybe -- but it's not.
  • The camera and lighting can accentuate minor dings. Compared to most '21 Peace dollars I've seen, the strike looks pretty strong, though I agree that the marks in the pics are distracting. May not be so distracting in hand though. Better than the 63 grade some are suggesting - I'd go 65 even with the nicks and maybe higher if it looks better in-hand.

Usually it's the other way around. The camera minimizes minor dings and hairlines. For a $5K+ coin, you'd think they would take the extra 30 seconds to adjust the lighting and get an accurate representation of the coin, rather than a picture that raises questions like this, wouldn't you?

would grade that no better than a 63.

Not in my opinion. While I don't think its a MS66, the strike is approaching full and while it is a picture I would grade it a MS64+

Yes, there NO WAY that this 1921 high relief Peace Dollar could be an MS-66. Even if it didn't have the obvious scratch high on the cheek, the strike is not strong enough to rate that grade. It's flat on the hair and on the corrisponding spot on the eagle's wing.

Yep, this is one of those times when I somebody hit the slab lottery.

  • NACT was/is DAVID HALL'S company. If you buy the coin, ask them to send it to PCGS first for grading. Mr. Hall might just ahd carry it from it's location to PCGS.
