Judging by the seller's other auctions I would have to guess artifical toning.
  • never looked at his other stuff.
bought from him before and was happy.
cheap coin, will make a nice golf ball marker !
    image
  • Well. . . with all the spotting and stuff, it's likely NT.
I don't think it was cooked or anything.
Unless they were testing out the egg toning method discussed earlier.
    image
  • IMO, i've seen pieces looking exactally like that at shows, only a few years off, in NGC holders, so I would assume that it would be real.

Considering this seller has been the subject of many AT threads here, I wouldn't bed.

Based on the sellers other coins it is probably AT but, then again, who cares? The coin is ugly. Does it matter whether it's AT or not?

Hey guys, let me share what I KNOW with you. The seller is a very likable person and he's up front about the toning.

<< <i>The source of toning on this coin is questionable >>

He also gives you a 5 day return privilege. On a whim I picked up a
couple of cheap pieces from him and when in hand actually they're quite pretty. After speaking with him he came clean and told me
he has no idea what the procedure is or how it's done but that he gets them and is actually selling them for a small percentage,

for a friend. He is quite amicable and very up front about everything, even in his text! The 2 I bought are actually quite nice and the coins have otherwise super surfaces. Well, that's it...that's all I knowimage
After examining them I don't know if PCGS would certify them but I think NGC would.
  • <<<After examining them I don't know if PCGS would certify them but I think NGC would.>>>

That coin and Many of the sellers others are AT and No NGC will not grade it.

  • Hey !

I thought the reverse was neat, the obverse is kinda ugly !
would i pay good money for it ? no,i like my proofs Cameo, look at the idiots 1957 Proof Registry set @ NGC ,its pretty damm nice.
I dont care if its AT,for 5 bucks it'll make a neat golf ball marker.
Anybody here says they never wasted 5 bucks is lying !

Sounds like you know for sure Scott.image
Notice the usage of the words "don't think" & "think"
"don't think PCGS" etc. The 2 I am looking at....Hmmmm, maybe,
Let's just say that I have seen more radically toned, "electric" and "Neon"
certified by both grading services....particularly Morgans.

NOW, I'M FINISHED WITH THIS. I have work to do. Good day!image
  • BoomBoom Posts: 10,165
Soooo, Scott, I see you sell radically toned coins.image How do you tone yours?
Granted you have 100% positive feedback but are you gonna say that all your coins are NT and NONE are AT?image
  • I thought you were finished?

Um, yeah I believe they are all NT image

I have NEVER tryed to AT Coins! nor do I try to buy AT and sell them as real NT

I have only had 1 body bag (and it was from NGC) for a 1963 Nickel that was in IMHO NT but the type that PCGS and NGC will not grade anymore.

if you see one that you believe it is not I will submit it and we can make a bet it will not BB due to being AT! Wanna bet??????

I like to gamble. When I get time I'll pick the coin and you submit it to PCGS. Deal?image
Don't get you panties in a wad man. The thread asked about a particular coin and a certains seller and I'm telling you what I know-OK! If you mean any of my coins, I say upfront how they got that way. In fact, let me double check RIGHT NOW to be sure I didn't inadvertantly "copy" something I wasn't supposed to.

AT, and not a very attractive example of it either.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I respect everyone's opinions. I myself do not know the first thing about toning or cooking coins however in 2 of my listings I did say exactly what I had done. How the following can be construed as AT I have no idea because nothing was done to the coin.

"Ever since I broke the roll open it has just lain out on my jeweler's tray and doing absolutely nothing to it the coin's colors get more and more intense by the day!"

Is this perceived as AT? We're not talking about putting it on the window sill either. In fact, it is quite dark and cool in this room....so you experts maybe can enlighten me here. Heaven forbid I do not want to jack somebody out of $7.50. I'd never be able to sleep again.image

I have GOT to learn to post pics. I don't even know if this will work but we'll try and if it doesn't I'll just give you the item # Scott.

Now, it's foolhearty to challenge a man at his own game, especially since I know nothing on the topic, but I DID open my big mouth and I suppose if I lose it will just cost mme $50 and an egg removal kit!image

Scott, my pick is item # 2226023183. You crack that baby out and submit it RAW(NO CROSSOVERS) submitted in the buff and documented, producing a scanned copy of the naked coin and the submission form along with the results and you're on!

BTW, Thanks Craig, that's what I did and that's all I know. If I knew how to do this obviously I'd be asking the kind of money Scott is. Scott, win lose or draw...no hard feelings. This has gotten personal and it shouldn't have but what's done is done. I just may get a $50 lesson but I expect you to be man enough to tell the truth. In fact, if it does grade at PCGS I'm sure you won't mind showing the coin up here! Thiis one if it comes out
  • Hello Boom,

Yes it did get a little personal but that's ok no hard feelings. You make it sound like I MADE that coin and/or ALL of my coins. When infact I PURCHASE ALL my coins allready Toned. Just because I have a lot of Wild Toned coins does not mean that I Made them (many I have submitted though). It is what I like "Toned Coins" so that is what I look for.

I will end the listing and submit it later next week along with a few other coins that are currently on my site.

here is a pic of the coin you wish to bet on it is currently in an NGC MS 66 Holder and was purchased from forum member greattoning off ebay:
    Good Luck!

Fugly? I like the coin. Looks like a 58 Mint Setter to me. Whoever is betting it will NOT get bagged has an easy $50.

Scott, first try to sell your coin. It's not that important. If it doesn't sell then do it. There is no sense in wasting your money that you're already in to this coin for and the listing. Like I said, this got out of hand and I'm not out to beat you out of $50 or to make you look bad. Just let it run. We got OT and this is senseless and much to do about nothing! I don't even care if I'm right or wrong- you have nothing to prove to me!image
  • Sorry i dogged your Roosie !
    to me it looks AT

The whole thread was about a 5 dollar POS

I only asked for an opinion on it.

Its a nice ball marker !

    Fuhgetaboutit !

  • Boom,

I have nothing against you either, I agree it went a'lill too far. You have to know though that I will defend my reputation to the end as I am Fully against AT'ers and people who defend them and try to say that I AT coins. The Toned coin market is starting to suffer due to there being too many AT coins and new cookers. I am willing to let this die as well if you wish.

Agreed! This is much to do about nothing. We got out of hand and totally OT. I'd rather be friends. You have absolutely nothing to prove to me and $50 one way or the other doesn't matter either!image
  • Nothing seems AT about that coin to me. Not the colors, nor the distribution of the colorsimage

As far as the PCGS/NGC thing is concerned, I have seen plenty of dimes that looked just like that in both companies' holders.

Not crazy about the proof 1957 quarter and don't see anything else in the seller's inventory that I'd bid on.

I bought a nice '57 a while back that I've since upgraded in my album

    Link to pics

    coin is since sold
