TDN, how often do you run across Trade Dollars that have "fake" chopmarks? In other words, chopmarks that have been recently added to a low dollar coin for the sole purpose of increasing its value.

I've only seen one coin [on ebay, where 95% of the trade dollars offered are fakes] that I thought was a fake with chopmarks - which means the chopmarks are fake as well.

In general, the chopmarks reduce the value - not increase it. There are only a couple of dates in a couple of grades where it would go up somewhat - and I doubt those are well known enough to represent much of an opportunity to someone who would do such a thing.

Is there such a thing as a "famous" chopmark?? I mean one used by a well known asian merchant that is easily recognizable?

There are a couple of websites [which I don't have handy] that translate the various chops. I'm sure that there are several that repeat themselves.

Some 'chops' are engraved on the coin's surface.

It can be covered in chopmarks as long as the date is visible and there is no other problems like cleaning, damage etc.
