Your favorite modern commemorative

I like the 1986 Statue of Liberty half dollar best. The reverse reminds me of classic commemoratives. (Hope Russ dosen't mind me using his image)

EDIT: Feel free to tell me if I missed any, i'm not sure if I got all the 2003's and 2004's.

  • i went with the liberty half, too. the liberty set was the first commemorative set i bought. image

i wish i could've picked the first flight gold eagle, but my gosh...the wrights just aren't that photogenic. at least the reverse on the eagle is pretty. i like the lewis and clark set, too. not really sure why, but i guess i'm drawn to them because of the nickels. they'll look nice together. image i like the women in military service set. i wanna get those because i put my mom's name in as a member of the memorial.

  • Congress $1. The capital dome doesn't take up the entire face of the coin, leaving lots of room for the deep mirrors on the proof coin, and the reverse vaguely reminds me of the reverse of the coins used in the Philippines when it was still a U.S. posession.

Most of 'em I don't care for, but I did buy some of the proof Columbus halves from the Mint in '92. (My then-wife-now-ex's birthday was on Columbus Day, so one of 'em made a nice gift).

I think the Dolley dollar is beautiful.

You can have all the Olympic coins. While I don't think they are all hideous (just most of them), they bore me to tears. This goes for the Darkside as well. There is just something about Olympic coins that bores me. But I had an amazingly-toned Soviet 10-rouble volleyball commem once, which had been struck before the 1980 Moscow games. I sent it off to ANACS, wondering if it would come back AT or not. It didn't. MS68. That was the highest grade I have ever made on a submission to anyone. It had truly amazing colors. This was a couple of years ago- I would bet it would fetch stupid money during today's toning craze, despite the fact that it was not an expensive coin to begin with.

I like the 1984 Olympic Coliseum Dollar, not because of the obverse, but because of what I consider to be one of the best eagles ever and definitely the best of the modern era on the reverse.
  • it's tough to pick one, most either have a good obverse or a good reverse.

I chose the Congress Dollar, I like the Reverse, and the Obverse looks like one bad ass mofo coming to lay the law down!

I also like the 84 Coliseum Dollar, good obv. and rev. plus it was the first olympics I remember, and I spent alot of saturday's at either race tracks or the coliseum watching USC football games.

shoulda chose the 84, thats what i get for being so impulsive. I just sat here and reflected for a good 5 minutes on many a day at and around the coliseum.

  • I voted for the statue of liberty dollar. The obverse of that coin is very nice with the full lady liberty.

Just the other day I was thinking about a thread like this but the thought of doing the poll was pretty intimidating! Good work.

There are so many drab modern commems.

My favorite isn't listed - the 1986 Statue of Liberty gold eagle. I love that obverse.

Definately the 2000 Library of Congress Bi-Metallic (Gold/Platinum) - I've always loved the look of this coin and have been wanting one since issue, fortunately I was able to pick up a nice graded proof on Ebay yesterday for my collection...

    Cheers,
  • Well I voted but wanted to change my mind after. I should have voted for the two 70 that NGS just gave me on two of my Moderen Commemoratives and what was the good new nothing less then MS or PF-69 really helps on the resell. One of the 70 was on MT. Rushmore the other on 1989 $5 W Congress PF70 UC. Now if my Early do just as good I'll have my X'mas present and be very happy and be a good little boy the rest of the year. Can't wait for the St. Mountain it was beautiful look like the day the guy bought it.image

  • Laura Gardin Fraser's George Washington design has neo-classic implications and is brought to life well on the $5 piece of 1999. It's one of the best coin designs in US history.

True enough, Hoot, but it's only a modern by date, not by design. Almost a pattern, in a way. Great looking coin.

2001 Buffalo is my favorite..also I'm considering either the Buffalo or the Law Enforcement for my Type Set. I think I'm leaning towards the Buffalo though.....
