....they will come back body bagged for one reason or another?! Let's say you bought an expensive coin years ago. Now you are wonderig if that pretty toning isn't at or that mintmark isn't added but you are too afraid to have your worries confirmed? Fess up now!!!!

Nope. If I have the slightest doubt about any of my coins, they leave my collection. I also don't usually buy really expensive coins (i.e. the type you would send to be slabbed) raw.

I do, however, own a darkside coin that I have considered sending in (probably to ANACS or NGC), but I have a fear that it might come back as a restrike (although I am pretty sure it is an original).

I guess I'm afraid to send this one in. I keep going back and forth on whether it is endroll NT or AT. The reverse is almost a gun-metal grey color, which makes me think it was a shake-and-bake job, if the reverse were red it would be on the way west.

I have a few "cleaned" coins that were bodybagged over the years from past submissions.
I had turned in a couple of Morgans a few years ago, and they camed back bagged as "cleaned" but
they don't look any different than the ones that were slabbed. But what do I know.
I figure to wait a few years and try again.
I got burned on a 1916 SL TI Quarter that is AU58 that I bought as MS, I'll have to wait for the patina to
reappear for a few years, every few years or so I check it out and put it back to age some more. It is a pretty nice coin though.
I have a really nice AU58 1857 penny that someone cleaned trying to make it a MS penny. I figure maybe a bunch of years to
get it back to normal if ever. Depends on how much copper or tin leached off the surface when they dipped it.
I have a number of NGC and ANACS coins I want to crossover one of these days, but I haven't been in a hurry to take the plunge yet.
Every time I renew and send in some for my freebies to see if they make it or not.
Over the years I've gotten a lot better at knowing which will slab or not.

I know. I've heard that from a couple different board members whose opinions I respect.

What makes you think that? I always thought it was NT because the colors blend so gradually, and I've seen similarly toned Barbers. I'm interested.

I have a few Indian Cents I believe to be original red, but I guess I'm not sure. My 14-d Lincoln is raw, I'm more sure that's original but I guess there's always a chance I (and the dealer I bought it from) could be wrong.

This 1797, 1 over 1, half cent has already flunked at PCGS. I've seen much worse of examples of early copper in slabs.

About the only early copper you can get in a slab is very high grade, very low grade or pieces that have extensive marks on them that look like they have been through a meat grinder. NGC has graded a slew of those.

If your early copper coins looks decent, chances are they will body bag it.



BTW JxnBoy, the color on your 1918-S quarter is not good because it looks dull and flat, and the "bulls eye" is WAY too perfect. If I can find it I'll post a picture of a Barber Quarter that is a toned original coin. Maybe that will show the difference for you.

they'd body bag my favorite morgan (1888-p) in a second, but i don't care because she has more value to me than anything else i have.

i keep thinking about getting my first flight set slabbed but i am afraid that they'll bb them even though they're still sealed in their holders.

But believe it or not, I cracked one of the coins on my vest out of a slab! It was an 1870 Canadian half dollar, ANACS VG details, net FR02!

They body bagged THAT half cent? For heavens sake WHY? I have seen a LOT more questionable copper in slabs than that coin. An if they did bag it, it is a really good example of a coin that is still very collectible even bagged. I would think that that coin offered raw would be snapped up very quickly.

YES, in particular some toned coins. I don't know the first thing about cooking coins and I don't WANT to know either,
but there are some that I've left out on a jeweler's tray that have toned on their own. I have no idea how PCGS would look upon them and NOT knowing scares me as they are really pretty...just an experiment to see what would happen if left out.

Yep, Conder they body bagged THAT half cent.

They also body bagged my 1797 S-139 large cent, which is listed in Breen's large cent book as among the finest known in AU-50. The coin was ex Waldo Newcomer, B. Max Mehl, Dr. James Sloss, R.E. Naftzger, Jr. Dorothy Nelson, Stack's, Jesse Iscowitz and yours truly. They also body bagged an 1814 large cent in AU-50 that came from the Matte Rothard Collection, an 1902 over 0 half cent (C-2), ex Garret, that was listed in Breen's book CC as a VF, and a beautify 1800 half cent in AU-58 that is still in my collection.

The graders at PCGS and NGC are PROFOUNDLY IGNORANT when it comes to grading early copper. They don't have clue.

I was afraid this might get bagged--David Lange said it had a 50% chance, and I was told by others it was natural endroll... came back NGC MS64

YES!!! But instead of sending them in to PCGS, I sent them to Williams Gallery first and they weeded out the no goes for me.
