Does PCGS give mulligans?

Here's a hypothetical question for veteran PCGS submitters: Say you submitted a few of your nicest specimens of Lincolns to PCGS, trying for 67's, and got 66's. Then say you picked up some PCGS slabbed 66's of the same dates and mintmarks, unseen in an auction, and when you got them they were not even close to being as nice as the ones you submitted and got 66's on, you would never have submitted them in the first place. Would you even try to point it out to PCGS, or just say, oh well, that's the subjective nature of the business?

No I would not point it out. You should have looked at the auction coins and even within one grade range there is variance of conditions of a coin.

  • Although a collector likes "nice" coins, appearance isn't the end all to grading a coin.
For example: One MS69 coin can look way much better than another MS69 coin of both the same year and type.
But both are graded as MS69 too.
You still have to grade the coin not the plastic.

The better scenario would be picking up 67s in PCGS holders, and when you see that they don't hold a candle to your recently graded 66s (a very likely occurance), then what would PCGS's answer be. I've never done this, but it's getting so bad that I may do that at a show. Has anyone done this recently? What was their response? I've gotten exactly ONE 67 on a Lincoln in the past six months. I used to get many more, and the coins I'm sending in now are not any worse than before.
