How to deal with an Unconfirmed Paypal address?

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Just received a Paypal payment and the address is unconfirmed (US address). Guy has good feedback. SHould I be concerned? Why would anyone have an unconfirmed address? I thought Paypal required the CC address match the shipping address. No?

Depends on the amount involved and the quality of his feedback. You lose PayPal protections by shipping to an unconfirmed address, but I've never felt particularly protected by PayPal anyway. Email him to confirm the address, and send with delivery confirmation. You'll be fine.

Unless it is someone with whom I've done business in the past, I will not ship to an unconfirmed address. No exceptions. It does not matter how good their feedback is since it could be a hijacked account.

  • I've used an uncofirmed address for years, and only had a handful of emails from sellers about it.

My PayPal confirmed address is my home address, which I don't give out over the Internet for security reasons.

I use a PO box in a local city to receive my eBay stuff.

PayPal doesn't require the shipping address match the confirmed (credit card statement) address, but if you ship to an unconfirmed address you are not covered under their policy and could lose your money if it's fraudulent.

But there are many people buying who don't have confirmed addresses that aren't scammers.

  • I have a confirmed (street address for my credit card) and unconfirmed address (PO Box)
with PayPal. I much prefer getting things sent to the PO Box, but will usually use the
confirmed address as I know people are most comfortable sending things that way.

  • Also - you should change your PayPal preferences to NOT automatically accept payments from unconfirmed addresses.

That way you have the opportunity to check out the buyer first and then decide if you want to accept it or not.

    Barry,

I had one similar experience for a double eagle that I sold on ebay. I emailed the seller to get the particulars, he seemed to be on the up-and-up, and the transaction went smoothly.

PayPal confirmed address = billing address. I like to have coins shipped to my PO box which is not confirmed. I use PayPal to pay whenever I can. 99% of the time I use my unconfirmed address. Almost always, USPO insurance is involved, so PayPal insurance is seldom an issue. I've made several hundred PayPal payments like this w/o issue. I also accept PayPal for auction I list and I donot have problems sending to unconfirmed address...again, I rely on USPO insurance NOT PayPal
    s protection.

Further, if you go into PayPal to accept or deny the payment, you will see how many other sellers this person has paid using PayPal - and if there's a lot, it might reduce your anxiety level.

But, to each his (or her) own.......

Seems like PreyPal is slowly but surely forcing folks to confirm their addy. They recently froze my account until I registered a CC.

I have two credit cards. One of them has our home address as the billing address; the other has our PO Box as the billing address. Depending on what I'm buying, whether I want it delivered to our house or to the box determines which card I use.

What about eChecks from unconfirmed addresses through PayPal? Are they subject to the same chargeback games as if the buyer used a credit card?

MAYBE YOU CAN FIND A SELLER THAT IS WILLING TO SHIP NEW KEYBOARDS TO UNCONFIRMED ADDRESSES.

If the person has good feedback I would not be concerned.
My PO Box is my confirmed address, so anyone shipping UPS or FedEx has to send it to my unconfirmed work address. And at other times I buy items as gifts and have it sent directly to that person.

Thus in my Paypal account I have 1 confirmed and 5 unconfirmed addresses, but they are all valid in shipping the items to me.

I don't mind sending a $200-$300 coin to an uncomfirmed address but I do have a problem sending $1,000+ coins to those without an unconfirmed address. mike

IT'S OBVIOUS THAT YOU DO NEED A NEW KEYBOARD SINCE THE CAPS LOCK KEY ON THE ONE YOU'RE USING IS STUCK DOWN.

My PObox is also unconfirmed. Damn Russ made me give him my real address to ship the coins I won to. Now, I keep 1 eye open and looking for a crazy looking, Charles Manson looking, tall guy running around looking for coins image
(don't tell Russ I've moved though, just in case image ).

As for littlejohn....only time i have seen someone type in all caps (that wasn't doing it from ignorance or to dig at someone) was a friend from years ago who was blind and was using a typing assist device. Littlejohn, are you using such a device? If you are, more power to you for doing coins and being so involved, if not.....why use all caps? Seriously. One doops is bad enough.

Years ago, there was a bogus netiquette eMail sent to AOL users telling them that they should use all CAPS in their eMail correspondence. Plenty of them believed it and still do it to this day.

Thanks for changing the caps littejohn.

I wasn't joking on my post...my friend (sight-impaired) did use a device like that and it was always all caps. Since it was an online game where a bunch of us met, it wasn't until just before I met him in person that he mentioned the sight impaired issue. Everyone just assumed he was being rude and didn't care.
He was really a nice guy though. Hard enough to use a keyboard/type sight-impaired. Even harder when you are playing an online text-based game and things happen quickly. He "died" quite a bit.

I hope you keep the proper netiquette for typing now. Makes it much better to read.

  • Getting back to the original subject of this thread -

I really don't want to publicize the address where my coins, porcelains, non-coin silver, etc., etc., etc., are kept, especially since there's a lot of stuff that either can't be, or isn't appropriate to, keep in a safe. My credit cards are all billed to my P.O. Box, and in the rare case that a seller refuses to use the postal service I either make pre-arrangements with the seller to ship to a friend's business address, or just pass on the item.

  • a confirmed paypal add. dose not mean anything,as anyone can get a change of address kit,so the item,is mail to a confirmed paypal add.

  • << <i>Why would anyone have an unconfirmed address? I thought Paypal required the CC address match the shipping address. No? >>

Well in my case it is because my Paypal account is linked to a checking account and not a credit card. (One I didn't HAVE a credit card, and two since I have multiple bank accounts and the ability to transfer funds between them instantly on-line I can keep the Paypal linked account nearly empty so that if anything does go wrong they can't tie up more than a few dollars of my money.) But since it isn't linked to a credit card, I can't have a confirmed address. Verified yes, confirmed no.
  • same with me.i have a master charge deit card.and it goes to my po. box
  • its says Unconfirmed Paypal address even when i sell to someone.
paypal said i would have to get a home post box,but the mail man want come up my drit road.i live on.and its over a 1/2 mile to the black top road. my mail not safe down at the main road,i can't even see the mail box.you sure would not want your money going there , would you.
    i know i would not.!!
    littlejohn
    aka - littlejohnartifacts on ebay.!
  • but i only pay for items on my paypal acc.
so on that ,i can't see why it would matter.!
  • Unless I missed it in the previous posts, I think y'all might be missing an important point:

First of all, I use my unconfirmed address almost ALL of the time when as a buyer I pay w/PayPal. I've yet to have a seller tell me they had a problem with it.

The reason I do this is that I use my business address (where there is somebody there from 8a-6p to accept packages) so as to never miss a delivery & have to go to the P.O. Sure, I could just as easily change one of my credit card billing addresses (that IS what a confirmed address is anyway - unless you do a location verification where they mail you a letter w/ a code on it that you then enter that code on their site to confirm an address WITHOUT a credit card - more about this another time) to my work address but I see no need BECAUSE I ALSO HAVE MY HOME ADDRESS ON MY PAYPAL ACCOUNT THAT IS CONFIRMED. If a seller truly has a problem, I just re-send it using my confirmed address instead.

So it really boils down to whether or not someone ALSO has a confirmed address. My guess is many do.

At the extreme (& YES, depending on their feedback) I WOULD be concerned if they didn't (I mean, who doesn't have a credit card or check card in this day & age except the scammers or the eccentric recluses) so after refusing the payment from the unconfirmed address I'd have the sender re-send it showing they DO in fact have a confirmed address on file w/ PayPal and then I'd make a decision whether or not to ship it to either - at their choice - or ONLY the confirmed one.

I guess to sum up, I think you DO have to weigh several factors - especially if it's not enough money to lose sleep over. image
  • My Paypal address used to be unconfirmed for a long time because I had my statements sent to a billpay service who posted them online for me to pay. Most of the sellers I was dealing with at the time had no problem shipping to my home address. The only ones I ever had problems with were ones who didn't state confirmed addresses only in their listings and then rejected my payments after they discovered my address was unconfirmed. I just told them flat out, you can either let me paypal it and send it to my unconfirmed home address, or wait for my personal check to arrive with my home address printed on it, and then wait for the check to clear to get your money. They all let me use Paypal rather than take a chance on a personal check.

I have had an unconfirmed address for three years, ever since I changed credit cards. No matter what I try, PayPal will not accept my address. I finally gave up in frustration.

I will be moving soon. This should get interesting.

<< <i>Why would anyone have an unconfirmed address? I thought Paypal required the CC address match the shipping address. No? >>

They know my address and it matches my credit card billing address. I am able to use my account normally in all aspects, unless I come upon a seller who will not accept "unconfirmed" addresses.

    First of all.........
A SELLER IS REQUIRED TO SHIP TO THE ADDRESS LISTED ON THE TRANSACTION DETAILS PAGE WHETHER IT IS CONFIRMED OR NOT!!!!
You do not lose Seller Protection if you ship to an unconfirmed address.
If you ship to an address other than what is on the Transaction page you lose Seller Protection, confirmed or not.
As long as you ship to the address on the Transaction page you have Seller Protection whether the address is confirmed or not.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

<< <i>change your PayPal preferences to NOT automatically accept payments from unconfirmed addresses >>

Sorry Dog, not so my friend. I just hashed this out with Paypal and they made it abundantly clear that if I ship to an unconfirmed address I have no seller protection. I now print my own USPS labels that come with e/ delivery confirmation for tracking purposes which is automatically linked to my Paypal account.

There will be no more of this bogus "I didn't get it" stuff. I want every advantage possible and since I have a Paypal Premier Business Account I will do EVERYTHING required of me to suit them in order to do away with any avoidable problems.

I still have to go down to the Post Office to insure the items. I have the slips already filled out and I'm in and out...GONE, in no time flat! No confirmed address= NO BID! SORRY Charlie.image

  • << <i>You do not lose Seller Protection if you ship to an unconfirmed address. >>

    PayPal thinks differently about that...

Important Note: Lorie Johnson has provided an Unconfirmed Address. If you are shipping items to Lorie Johnson please keep in mind that you will not be covered by the PayPal Seller Protection Policy.

I tell you what. No disrepect intended toward anyone and I don't know where Dog got his information from, but it just ain't so. You ship to an unconfirmed address having received payment through Paypal and not follow their rules, brother you're asking for trouble and are on your own. Read the Seller Protection Policy.
Here, let me c&p it for you: The Seller Protection Policy requires that you ship to the address shown on the Transaction Details page regardless of whether this address is the user's Confirmed Address or not.

Confirmed Addresses. Confirmed addresses are not an eligibility requirement for the Seller Protection Policy since confirmation is not available in every country due to Credit Card Association policies.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
    Dog,

You're sort of right and sort of wrong, and they're sort of right and sort of wrong. Yes, the language PayPal provides is confusing, and there are specific and infrequent times when seller protection is provided even when shipping to an unconfirmed address - usually only when shipping to a foreign country. However, the bottom line is that if you ship to an unconfirmed address, you are not protected against chargebacks. Period. No ifs, ands or buts.

This is because, aside from any PayPal stipulations, the underlying credit card issuer has their own requirements. If a merchant ships to other than the billing address for the credit card - which is the same thing as "confirmed" address - your ass is still swinging in the wind if a chargeback is filed.

Edited to add some language from the policy with additional commentary:

<< <i>As long as the transaction is eligible for seller protection, you can ship to the address on the Transaction Details page whether such address is confirmed or unconfirmed. >>

This looks like it clears the way, but what they don't tell you is that 90% of the time PayPal will list the transaction as NOT eligible for protection when the buyer has an unconfirmed address - even when the transaction meets all the other criteria. The usual exception being, as noted above, foreign addresses.

I work away from home 90% of the time doing right-of-way work. There is no way I can confirm addresses everywhere I go and I prefer to have the coins I buy sent directly to me. I have 100% positive feedback and have had numerous sellers refuse to ship to where I am located due to it being unconfirmed. I do understand their position, but, there have been a lot of coins I would have purchased otherwise. In my case it was their loss.
I never met a coin that wouldn't fit in my collection.....
