If Randy Johnson were playing on a decent team he'd have 20 wins, and be running away with the Cy Young race. 268 K's and a 2.74 ERA? It's a shame that effort is being wasted this year.

Thats how I felt about Schilling back when he played with the Phils..If I was picking a rotation I would have:

    R Johnson
    R Clemens
    C Schilling
    ???

Benedict Arnold fought brilliantly for the American cause for six years. He was badly wounded twice. Drawing deeply into his own purse to pay expenses, he was never reimbursed for most of them, nor honored by Congress for his victories. Crestfallen and melancholy, he was approached by a smooth-spoken spy for the British. Arnold made the worst decision of his life...he switched sides. He died in England, at age 60, and was buried in a "jumbled, unmarked grave" without military honor or notice. His last years were full of misery and bitterness .
  • I agree. Schmidt looked like a lock till about a month ago when he got hurt and the Braves roughed him up his next start. Since then he's pitched like crap, and it looks like Clemens will get it.

Randy Johnson deserves the Cy Young this year. The only thing Rocket has him on is the W-L record. Johnson has had an awesome year for a terrible team. With a decent team, his record would be there too.

3 of the top pitchers in the majors (Schilling, Clemens & Johnson) are all over 40 and show no signs of slowing down. Just great to watch them keep going.

Shilling will definetley age a few extra years in his next few starts.

Or perhaps Schilling, cause a Shilling thread might get censored.

  • ...yeah it's just too bad that Randy Johnson deserves it right now......we'll have to see how their last 2 starts go.....
  • What a STUD:

Makes you wonder what these guys do to keep their arms in shape, whereas many newer pitchers can't stay healthy for a year...what is it?..genetics?....training?.....combination?

Wow - I see murcerfan is back - it only took him a couple weeks to return after the major choooooooke! He hasn't even editied his posts above yet ----- awesome!

Assuming Bonds wins the MVP. Has this ever happened before with two 40+ year old players winning the MVP and Cy Young in a league in the same year?
  • Thank you

Clemens does deserve it, but Johnson would have also been a legitimate choice. If Johnson had a handful more wins, he would have had a more attractive resume.

I have no problem with Clemens winning it, but my choice would have been Johnson since he is not far behind in wins and is superior in every other way. The wins did not come to Johnson because the bull pen blew it or he severly lacked consistent run support.

I like the fact both guys are going strong at 40+. I am a firm believer that one has to rid themselves of these age related stereotypes to see more progress. 40 is not fatal. With the right attitude, nutrition and mindset, I think great things can be achieved. Clemens and Johnson have set the bar high. I would like to see Julio Franco to continue playing till he is 50+. Not just playing, but playing well! An unlikely 3000 hitter, but maybe not so unlikely if he keeps this up.

  • Roger is considering retiring for real this time. If he does it might be a good move because he will go out on top just like Elway. Clemens has nothing more to prove.

Maybe he will finish his career in a Red Sox uniform .... image

He did file for free agency.

It is just a formality. I doubt if he would go back to the Sox. He would probably go to the Yankees first. Da man can still pitch!!!!

He won't come back to the Yankees unless Petite does. That would be cool, but unlikely.

Roger got elected into the Boston Red Sox hall of fame yesterday along with Nomar, Pedro and their radio announcer Joe Castiglione.

It was quite a ceremony and was well deserved on all their parts.

The team is doing much better now that they had the big fire sale also and are fun to watch again.

From what I read in our local paper sports section Roger received moderate applause compared to Nomar and Pedro. Nomar and Pedro received exhuberant applause.

Nomar's story has changed over the years. Supposedly, from a recent interview, he was (now) "devastated" to be traded. Not the way I recall it. He seemingly had checked out well before the trade. I recall watching a breakneck game against the Yankees that had every member of both teams watching from the top step of the dugout...except for one player just sulking while sitting on the bench, seemingly not even watching the action. Yeah, that was Garciaparra.
