Testing a new technique...

Is this too dark??? Too flat? Too something?? I'm trying all kinds of tweaks to get the tone right...it is a very orange/gol coin.

  • image Would like to see more luster... and it does seem like it might be a bit dark, if the coin is bright and dripping with luster (And I hope it is, seeing how it's graded 66!)

It's really hard to get lustre, proper detail and color with gold coins...it seems you can get two of the three...but then they start to conflict.

Within the constraints of the system [single shot that includes both obverse and reverse and is still under 100k], you've done very well!

Its one of the nicest 1931's I have ever seen...No doubt about it.

What bank did you rob ?

JB, nice pics. The late date coins have different luster, so I'd bet both pics are very accurate. Great coins!

Thanks MightyMouse...that is a very true observation..the 1929-1932 in ms65 or better have "liquid" looking fields unlike any earlier dates...and any other gold coins for that matter..and the 1932 has amazing metal flow lines on the periphery that add a neat eerie effect.

Why do I feel that we're chatting with the "unknown" owner of the one legal 1933 St Gaudens ...

  • Oooh, shiny, drool. . .

Really nice. It is tough to get a photo just right on gold coins.

I've been thinking that maybe we should somehow, get a bunch of digital cameras together, and photograph the same exact gold coin with
all of the different cameras, to see which camera would work the best.
I think the different CCD sensor arrays the cameras have and their internal software for image processing causes a lot of differences.
I feel that there are several cameras that would bring out more features of a coin much better than the other digital cameras.

earl...I would imagine that a good SLR would be better, but the downtime to tweak subtleties make the process so long...like getting a coin shipped via US mail!! image

That would be an interesting experiment since I'd guess we all work with one, not knowing if we are getting the best images. Personally, I'd let mgoodm3 take all my photos and end there!! Put up a pic Mark....I miss the last one.
