Latest Type Set addition ..... 1855 Large Cent

Picked this one up on ebay. Don't have it in hand yet.
It looks like it has nice details but problems with PVC?.

Any suggestions on how to clean it without damaging it. ?

Thanks

Give it a dip in acetone. That should take the PVC off; however, if the PVC has already caused damage to the coin, there is not much you can do. That would be a pretty decent type coin with the PVC dipped off.
  • That doesn't look like PVC to me but rather your typical Corrosion, verdigris I believe they call it. Very common on the copper large cents, but I don't know a good way of removing it???

I've used a product for PVC and verdigris removal called Xylol (generic = xylene) and it works well without damaging the copper surfaces.

I believe acetone takes off verdigris as well.

I agree - it looks like corrosion. I also think the coin has been cleaned - it has an unnatural color.
  • Yeah, corroded... yes, you can get the green gunk off... unfortunately, it'll have already damaged the surface... you'll get rid of the green gunk, but you'll still have chunks of metal missing in the surface... but removing the corrosion should stop it from corroding more...
