Yay!!! I made it!
Ok I can't think of anything creative to do for this giveaway so I will do this.
I will draw a name at random from the YN's (under 21) who post here and tell us who was the most influential person in their life with regards to their interest in coin collecting. In other words, who got you into it and how did what they do get you hooked?
The prize will be their choice of a one year subscription to either Coin World or Numismatic News. I will take posts until Friday 9/24 at 6:00 pm pacific time.
Good luck!

Congrads on the big 1000 DesertRat and thanks for the giveaway!!
Ironically, I actually stumbled into coin collecting by myself. Nobody in my family coin collects (well... my dad hoards state quarters, SBAs and SACs, but not really a collector). I was introduced to coins in 6th grade while looking for a book in the school library. In my search, I discovered a coin book and started looking at all the different coin types. For the next couple of months I searched through all of my change, keeping coins that were older than 1970. I actually found quite a few silver coins and numerous wheat cents. Then, I was introduced to eBay; at the age of 13, I created my first eBay account and that is where my real coin collecting began.
Most Influential Person:
I am pretty good friends with a local dealer. I would consider him one of the most influential person in regards to coin collecting. He has taught me many things about the hobby and is in general very helpful with any inquiry I may have (and will give me good deals on coins). I would also say that this forum has been a HUGE influence on the hobby. When I joined here, I really didn't know that much about coins. From reading numerous threads and talking with such knowledgable people, I have greatly improved my grading skills, and consider myself somewhat knowlegable (well... a lot more knowledgable than I was).
Thank you for entering me in your giveaway!
Nice touch for your thousandth post... the YN's are quick these days...especially the YN "ddbird"...he was one of my 500th post give-away's.

Nice of you to have a giveaway, I appreciate it. I go to Hastings (a superstore, which happen to have tons of magazines, and I go there just to read about calculus and coin magazines, each mag cost about 4 bucks each, so I having this subscription would come in handy )
Well, here's my story:
I am 16 currently. What got me into coin collecting is my father, whose name is Paul. I first started collecting coins when I was 6. Of course, I didn't know much about it then. The year was <1997 (Because I know I got my first gold coin in 1997). When I was 6, my dad showed me all of his coins. I was amazed at all the coins he had! (He was born in 1955) when he was growing up he collected JFK half dollars. The silver ones were available back then, but most of his were the 40% kind. He still to this day has stacks of these. He told me that he collected when he was growing up. So this is just one of the many factors that sparked my interest in coin collecting and got my hooked.
Another factor that got me interested in coins was all the fun things we did together (numismatistly). He bought me Whitman lincoln cent books and (as most young children do) we filled in the lincoln cent books with wheat cents. Our goal was to try and fill the book. We got close, but never managed to. To this day I haven't filled it; perhaps to remember all the fun we had back then. (The reason we couldn't fill it was the semi key and key rarities in series). I remember my parents getting me a book I wanted, which I still have and read to this day (and I recommend for anyone, even an adult to read it, it's helpful): EyeWitness Books, Money. When I was ... perhaps a year or two older, I saw a cartoon on TV. It was robinhood, and on this episode robinhood got a gold coin for his birthday. Recently my birthday was coming up, so realizing my love for coins, and especially the warm, yellow-iridescent hues of gold, I couldn't resist buying a gold coin for my birthday. So I went to a place in Brea, CA called "Gold'N'Coins". The dealer happened to have a gold coin, (several actually.). I had over 100 dollars for my birthday that year. So I purchased a 1997 bussiness strike (UNC condition I guess) raw, american eagle.
Recently I've gotten back into it, (I lapsed for awhile from other collecting of items, like beanie babies, which are now worthless) and I realized that coins are perhaps the only collectible that truly retains its value; (When I say value I mean the intrinsic value of the coin), which is what truly makes coins so wondrous. To this day I still collect gold coins, and if you look at my signature line at the bottom of this post, you will see all the coins I have to this day. In them, includes my very first coin I purchased that truly sparked my interest in gold coins and numismatics in general. Now I own several books, and thanks to this forum, have made me truly knowledgeable about everything in general about coins except errors and varieties. (I happen to not study those).
Thanks for taking the time to read this!
congrats on reaching 1000
Thanks again!
