It appears (to me, anyway) that Darksiders don't spend a lot of time griping about ebay, discussing the pros and cons of toning or dipping ad nauseum, or clobbering other sellers with regularity, or wondering out loud when they will receive those coins they sent off to be certified.

They seem to enjoy the fun parts of the hobby, which is one crucial reason I have recently come over to the Darkside. It's a much more relaxed atmosphere. And the coins are really nice !!!

Besides, Cosmicdebris and Aethelred already bought most of the good stuff image The rest of us are busy shopping for what's left.

Quite honestly, people usually post here when they have something useful to say. We don't get so many of the 'cheat' threads and posts you find on other forums.

We try mostly to go for quality over quantity.

I don't usually visit here - but that is only because I and so many others are mostly into U.S. coins exclusively with all it numerous issues and flame possibilties image
I would assume as it seems there are either many more collectors of US coins or there are not enough World coin collectors that know or care to post to these threads/forums.
On the side I collect coins from the Palestine Mandate of which I'll put a thread together maybe tonite to add to this forum, generate comments or to gain more information......

291 and others I'd add there are more posts and threads here in this World section than other World Forums. AT least I think - please correct me if that is not the case.

Would like to see those from Palestine, I was a US collector but sold much of it, but still have a nice US type set early 1800s to late 1900s.
We welcome new subjects on world coins, and I haven't seen much on Palestine, I think I may have one coin from there.

Many times I get a new coin or two but don't post because I,too, feel that I would be boring people with my less then spectacular coins. But then I think that I love to see all the coins that others post just for the fun of seeing different coins from different countries and different times - and I love to share in the joy and enthusiasim that someone who has just aquired something special to them displays when they post for the rest of us to see.

I think maybe I will start posting pictures more often - I figure you can look or not but it might be folks out there that feel they way I do.

I've just gotten back into ancients after a long absence. I am now looking at a recently aquired Roman Republic uncia from about 215BC, VF, cost $99. This beats a Morgan dollar any day.

Don't ever feel that way Shep. My collection is very limited in scope so I don't get to see a lot of different issues. There may be things that you post that I would never have seen otherwise and even if I don't reply I try to look at every "I just got...." post.image

I've been busy working and writing my second article for Numismatist. I hope they like it (and I can sell more cars). I'll be around more when I have more time.

The category of "world and ancient coins" is so broad that it's sometimes hard to find others who appreciate what we collect with the same level of interest. The upside is that there are lots of opportunities to learn about something new.

Actually, I haven't been buying many coins in the last few months. Most of my spare cash is going towards buying equipment for a business opportunity at the first of the year. Jester's challenges are definitely missed. Picture threads are great too, I have to start toying with my dad's cam and scanner more often.

There are some great photos here, but to me the threads seem hard to read.

Too much in the way of graphics, and too many additional "tag-lines" throw in that, once you start reading them, you realize that they have nothing to do with either the coins or the topic.

Just an observation from a newbie - not trying to be critical. Really.

I've not been posting as much here lately, which could account for some of the decreasing blasts of hot air. image

But one reason for my reduced posts on the Darkside lately is because it definitely HAS tapered off a lot lately. There have been days when even the Metal Detecting Forum has been busier! image

That's been my haunt more lately, but I feel a return to the Darkness comin' on. And maybe there'll be some giveaways in the pipeline soon.

Hmmm... yeah... that's the ticket. Think I'll put up some giveaways to jazz things up. I was just this afternoon thinkin' about dangling some Darkside bait over on the Liteside, to darken things up a little over there, and broaden some folks' horizons a bit. I have a ton of stuff for sale, too, but none of it is ready yet, and I have not had time to be dealing with packing and shipping, so I have tried to limit the amount of stuff I've offered on the forums and eBay.

Look for some "Darkside Enticement Giveaways" on the Liteside and some "Wake Up, Darksiders!" giveaways here, soon. image

Probably around the first of November, we'll be moving out to some property we just bought in the rural western part of the county, about 20 miles inland. This'll mess things up for a while in the short term, while we get our trailer moved out there, but the good news for the long term is that there is a sturdy outbuilding on the new property that will become my workshop. It's a beautiful spread, at least to us- two lots totalling 1.1 acres, all fenced in, with a driveway and two outbuildings and everything we'll need. It'll be great to have some room instead of living in a trailer park on a lot the size of a postage stamp.

Maybe by the time the dust all settles, I'll have myself some room to spread out, instead of working out of our cluttered living room, with all my stuff scattered all over our too-tiny trailer. Then I can be more actively selling and swapping.

... oh, sorry, I just came back from reading a few Liteside threads. Ach du lieber!! The posting volume here has always been a bit episodic. With a lot of the school-age and college-age guys busy with their studies and such, it usually slows down at the end of summer and early fall.

I kind of like it here and have been spending more and more time checking out the coins you guys post. Some of the coins posted are absolutely incredible and beautiful. After seeing a bunch of these coins, why would anyone want to collect a bunch of dead presidents? Congress must think that US coinage has to be as drab and boring as possible.

I am not sure how many darkside coin purchases denotes that I would be an official darksider. While funds are currently low for purchases, I have decided that I may sell a bunch of my lightsiders to fund darksiders. I think that should make me official - ya think?
Anyway, I am getting more and more 'turned on' to the kewl designs of darkside coins vs. the boring US stuff. I am not going to sell them all, but ya know Morgans really are boring coins.

Neptune, it's an Irish Garda (police) sports medal. I haven't been able to determine its actual age, but probably ca. 1960s-80s. It is amedal I actually own and also, unfortunately, strongly cleaned. The original isn't as colorful. However, I like the actual look and it's a good reminder to me that not everything is what it seems ... a useful remembrance for an old sorceror like me. image

It is an interesting piece - What is the center made of? Is it actual turquoise - or just colored so? And what is that design inside the turquoise color?

The turquoise and the navy blue are enamel inserts and the rest of the medal is made of copper. The designs are traditional Celtic knotwork. Here's an image of a proper version of the medal so you can get a better look at the designs.

I got mine for about $35-36 about May-July last year. They're rarely offered and as I said, the one in my icon was harshly cleaned with acid and the "normal" one has also been cleaned, but with minimal adverse effect. I got them off eBay from comerford.antiques, but I don't recommend him. He has an acquaintance in Ireland who apparently sells some nice stuff and passes the poorer quality material to Comerford to pawn off on eBay -- with no mention at all of their actual condition. The second one was supposed to be pristine, but wasn't. I couldn't get him to play intermediary or put me in direct contact with the guy, so I've done no further business with him. There are one or two other sellers who infrequently offer Irish medals but I've only seen one other Garda medal offered since and it was in no great shape and offered by Comerford. Maybe our Manxman Tony knows a good Irish dealer in these?
