You're lucky enough to get a MS70 back from PCGS, then it looks like this...

  • Thats kind of thing really ticks me off.

Of course it might have happened to rotate slightly in transit, but I think we all suspect that someone did a half assed job getting it into the holder and thought it was too much trouble to fix it.

  • Totally uncalled for!

  • Tap it on the edge of your palm hard and the coin will rotate back. Not that difficult.

It's more difficult then you think. The seller is in Pennsylvania and my arms aren't that long.

Won't work with that type of slab! The coin is in there for the long haul!

Cameron did exactly that for me last June in Long Beach, with just that type of slab. image

I've since done it with other late model pcgs coins, straightened 'em right out!

  • Thank you for verifying it can be done Baley. I have impressed tons of people with that trick because they think like ksteelheader and think it cannot be done. I don't even tap it that hard and it can be done with PCGS slabs other than the rattler holders!

Crack it out and resubmit it. I'm sure it will get a 70 again image

I thought you were going to show a ms70 with spots all over it. If you acquire it, I want to see the results of the tapping on the palm trick... image

It works on most heavy coins.

  • I sent these back for reholdering. A month later they shipped them back

When they mis-mount the coins like that, do they charge you for reholdering?
  • Guys, that coin has a reeded edge and will not rotate in that type of slab with the soft insert! If you believe it can be done, fine, but I have tried it with reeded edge coins and it does not happen...

    Ken
  • Hi,
that would not bother me at all. The tapping trick is an old trick, and it works just fine. But really, it is a 70 and we are collecting the coin right - what difference does this make? Does the plastic have an independant eye appeal that affects value or desirability? Not to me.

    Best,
    Billy image Nice 70!

  • << <i>When they mis-mount the coins like that, do they charge you for reholdering? >>

No, it's a "mechanical error" and there is no charge for reholdering or return shipping.

You do have to pay postage and insurance to send it back to PCGS though, so everybody wins image

I have done it with reeded edges and it works.

  • Cameron, put up or shut up! Post a pic of a PCGS slab right now with a reeded edge coin in it with a shot of the serial number. Then, in ten minutes, post another picture of the same serialed # slab with the coin rotated. If you can't, then move on!

    Ken
  • Ken, I would if I had a coin with a reeded edge. I don't.

  • << <i>Ken, I would if I had a coin with a redded edge. I don't. >>

    No sample slabs with quarters?
  • Ken, perhaps it can be done and you just aren't doing it right? I know many times in the past I've said something can't be done and then had a friend do it in about two seconds lol. My foot really doesn't taste that good =(
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

Since were buying the coin not the holder what does it matter?
Seriously though, I think it could be rotated back. It probably rotated in transit and will rotate back but it will take more than your palm, probably take taping the corner on a table top.
ksteelheader you see, the reeded edge does grip the neophrene ring securely but the entire coin & neophrene ring will rotate inside the slab.

  • I personally watched David Hall do it, but, it was with an older style holder. I've cracked enough of these out to know how they are constructed!

  • Pics coming in about 2 minutes.

I think the whole circular insert moves with the coin, right Cammie?

  • No, just the coin. The rubber insert doess come out when cracked but does not move when you tap it.

Ok I just had to try it. I didn't have any crooked ones but I just made one crooked. Man that's a $2k coin I just turned to make cammy's silly point. I hate yall.

Well, I didn't think it would work either, but I just did it on a quarter! But instead of tapping it in my palm, I gave it some good raps on a new post-it-note pad. Four or five whacks and it rotated about 10 degrees. Flipped it around and rotated it back as well.

Still, it is sad that PCGS can't get coins located in the holders correctly. I hope they don't say that they move in transit like the rattlers did.

Well I wasn't about to go beating one of my Sample Slabs on the porch so I had to use what I had just laying around.

Better check the current prices Dog, that's much more than a $2k coin right now.

I've tapped current-generation holders to straighten out errant coins.

Like cameonut mentioned, you can tap it on a pad of post-it notes or a paperback book without worrying about cracking it.

Well it took more than a pad of post it notes to turn mine. I had to knock it pretty hard on my concrete porch. Whole time I was thinking this is going to be an unintentional crackout.
I did a slabbed JRob $5 last week but it only took rapping it on the tabletop to turn it back to proper rotation.

Not really, Cameron! Just had a family emergency last evening while posting to this! Son was admitted to the hospital. Turned out to be kidney stones!

Thanks though for showing that it can be done!
