  • Morgan mint marks (except Philadelphia-No mint mark) will be above the "D" and "O" in "DOLLAR" on the reverse.

Morgan mm is on the rev at the bottom above the letters DO in dollar.
Peace mm is on the rev just below the word one. image

  • On Heritage when asked for mint mark....I don't see any morgans listed w/o a mint mark. This is the same with the peace dollar (1924)

  • the pic above does not have a mint mark, it's a Philadelphia minted coin.

By the way, WELCOME to the boards image
  • Is there a reason why Heritage does not list them when adding to my collection?

  • I dont understand the question

Are you asking why Heritage does not list them as Philadelphia minted coins, or say 1880-P for example?
  • Yes, that is what I'm asking. They only give the option for cc, s, and o but there are no options for philly.

  • HERE is a webpage with a nice, quick history, but alot of info, on Morgan/Peace dollars

Not sure whether you're askin about the coins or Heritage image
  • If you're lookin for a Philly coin, just put in the date ONLY without a "P" for the search.

any coin listed without a P or any other mm is a philadelphia coin
  • Tthank you for the link.

I'm trying to put a value on these coins. They will not be sold but would like to know what I have and Heritage does not list philly minted coins. Llike I said, Ii have a 1889 and 1921 morgan both in magnificant shape and also a 1924 peace dollar in magnificant shape. I will try to pst pics and maybe some you can help decide for me.

  • I do only add the date yet it only shows the other mm.

  • this website has a price guide, which is not a guarantee to value, but it can give you a general idea on what they're worth.

PRICE GUIDE, then select Morgans or Peace dollars.

any coin on that list with no mint mark is a Philly coin.
  • Thanks again. I wish they were minted in carson cityimage

good luck with your collection and ask questions!
  • imageimageimage In the past Philly coins were simply listed by their date, e.g., 1924, 1882, etc. because no coins minted in Philadelphia had a mint mark. Sometime after 1964 (EDIT: IN 1980) the Philly mint began putting a "P" mintmark on coins. (EXCEPTION: 1942-45 JEFFERSON NICKELS HAD A LARGE "P" MINT MARK ON THE REVERSE) So now when those coins are bought, sold, advertised, they are listed with the mintmark, e.g., 1999-P Delaware State Quarter. IMO this has resulted in other pre-1964 coins (EDIT: 1980) sometimes being bought, sold, advertised with a "P" designation, e.g., 1921-P Morgan dollar, even though the coin does not actually bear a mintmark of "P". When searching for these coins on the web just search by date--this way you will find the Philly coins regardless of how they are listed.

Also, there are a lot of price guides on the Web--PCGS, Coin Values (previously Coin World Trends), etc. I'd recommend looking at a lot of them--there is a range (sometimes wide) of prices for a given coin. Remember also that values in price guides are just that, guides. Your actual coin may be worth more or less depending on its eye appeal (in addition to its technical grade).

    Hey, Bill.

Didn't Philadelphia use a "P" MM before that? image
Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?

  • OK--so I forgot the 1942-45 war nickels!

Edited to add: Looks like 1980 was first year for P MM on a regular basis. I'm really not a modern guy.

  • Welcome aboard! image

Philadelphia began putting the P mint mark on the SBA in 1979. The other denominations (except the cent) followed in 1980. image
