AU + ????????????

http://cgi.msn.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39456&item=3931042559&rd=1AU+ ?????

Would be nice if an AU+ coin had a little bit of the reverse still left!

This date is commonly a terrible strike, particularly on the reverse. It certainly looks AU in terms of wear and surfaces, but I'd leave the "+++++" off as I'd not grade a coin with a strike this bad more than AU-50 under almost any circumstances, and I'd probably grade it XF overall, even though in terms of wear it looks at least AU-55 to me.

More fully, I'd describe this one as a solid AU in terms of wear, luster and surfaces, a terrible strike on the reverse that net grades it down somewhat, and leave it to the bidder to decide how much that pitiful strike net grades it down.

This coin is worth around $15 in XF-40 and $50-$60 in AU-50. The opening bid of $29 is roughly XF-45 money, which is on the high end of what I think it's worth given the strike.

That date is notorious for soft details. That coin is probably AU by wear. The details, however are around VF on the Obv and VG on the rev. That's an extreamly late die state. Although I dont have a problem with it being called AU, I certainly wouldnt pay AU money for it.

...now if you really want to see a stretch on the grading, check out this "250$ value." I dont know, looks XF45 on the ovb, and AU55 on the rev.... to me image.

"It has been graded with LGS standards." ... "PCGS estimates the

value of this item to be between..."

Wait a second. If you're going to use "PCGS estimates," shouldnt you grade with PCGS standards?

One other random thought about the auction this thread was built on.

While I think we can generally agree that this coin is not worth AU money even if it might be a technically AU coin, it's at least refreshing to see sellers of coins like this take big, clear pictures and plainly disclose the weak strike.
  • AU + some wear!!! Seems right to me.
