Now this is having faith in NTC!

1921 NTC Satin PF64 Peace $

I am sooooooo tempted, but what in God's name is this coin doing in that slab! This is a complete crap shoot.

Anyone willing to give it a go? Any guesses where it might sell?

  • If centles could have gotten it into a legit slab he would of. My guess....cleaned and re-toned.

That has a lot of potential downside.....BUT, it could be a gem.....like lotteries???

Even if it's cleaned and retoned, it doesn't matter. From Heritage -- $29,325.00 for a true 1921 Satin NGC PF64. So I would imagine that this one still will have value even if it's cleaned and retoned. The question is -- is it authentic.

I'd be VERY interested in what ANACS or NCS would have to say about this coin... image

I can't tell based on the scan whether its an EDS (early die state) strike with nice high relief or whether its a legitimate proof. ,but as said prior, there is no downside , YET.image

I know nothing about satin proofs, but is that whiteish stuff around the portrant suposed to be there?

Whiteish? To me, it looked more greenish, almost like the color of PVC infection.

Heh, I wonder if NTC has a guarantee regarding their counterfeit detection... Their web site does not indicate any sort of guarantee.

Well you can always buy it and return it if you dont like it. I once bought something from centles that I returned. He was very good about it and still left me a positive feedback.

  • I am not very familiar with satin proof 1921 Peace Dollars, but wouldn't the strike be better on a proof?

Even if it is a Satin Proof, it's got bad PVC and a fingerprint. image

  • Mark Feld's images look PR. The NTC coin well... doesn't! At least from the pics provided.

  • Are those fingerprints all over the lower rim?? And it looks misattributed to me. Either it's misattributed or this thing has seen some hard times. I have XF-AU Peace dollars I like better than that one.

There's no way you can tell from the scans whether it's proof or not. You would have to have the coin in hand to see the die diagnostics to confirm proof status and then again with a Satin, it's still relatively a crapshoot. Obviously whatever it is, it isn't a 64. If it's a proof, it's impaired and probably PF60 or less.

That was the point of my thread -- you would have to have a lot of faith in NTC to buy this coin without a guaranty.

And there's only a 5 day return policy. I suspect this coin might be a business strike from proof dies, so a true expert would have to take a look it before being able to make a decision whether it truly is a proof or an early business strike, by that time, your 5 days are gone.

  • Wow!! The image from coinguy1 is a MUCH sharper strike. Wish I had $30k to burn on one.

That NTC POS can't be proof based on that comparison.

And the final price --- a whole lot more than I thought!

Lots of bidding on this one. I would love to know what finally happens with this coin. I might have to email the buyer someday and see what he/she says.

The seller of this coin knows coin values and believe me, he's no Santa Claus. I would run like hell from this piece of trash.
