I have bought 2 78S recently also. Yours, mine, and most of the pictures I've seen of 65s and 64s look as though the breast on the Eagle has a BB dent. Is that just 78S Morgans? I don't see that on other Morgans.
The obverse is 64 all the way.I don't know about the reverse. Is that toning on the breast feathers?? If it's wear, I don't think it should be in a 64 holder.
I think BB is the "Belly Button" on the eagle - a circular recessed area on the breast. It's a striking characteristic, and some people enjoy collecting them.
The Belly Button variety, I have seen another 1878 with this also, but much deeper. It looked like someone had used a punch to dent the eagles breast. Does anyone know if this BB thing is a VAM variety or not ?
That's not a dent or a variety, it's the way the coin was designed!
Almost as soon as the 1878s came out, negative public reaction caused the Mint to redesign the eagle to have a rounded, stronger looking breast... hence the "reverse of 1879" variety that was used until yet another redesign in 1921.
