Help with grade on 1911 $5 Indian (no photos ,just a link) UPDATED with ANACS grade

Any ideas on a grade? Once I get my PCGS package I will use one of my free submissions to get it graded. The photos may be large if so, im sorry the wife knows how to set the camera . I just push the button. After looking at the photos I need better lighting , the coin does not hve any shadows on it it is evenly toned. Here is the link to my 1911 Gold Coin

I'm no expert at grading these, but I tend to agree with darktone...there is just way too much wear on the coin to be an AU58 or MS60. I'd guess VF-35, maybe XF-40 on a good day. Just my opinion based on the pics. By the way, unless there is a little 'D' mintmark on the back, it probably isn't worth submitting...it just isn't valuable enough to justify certification. Again, just my opinion.

Best way to learn via the internet is by looking through the auction archives at Heritage. Do a search for XF on $5 Indians and I think you'll see that is probably the best you could hope for. Just be sure to look at a true XF, not one that is net graded XF.

The picture is too dark to tell completely but it looks as if it was cleaned too. The "shiny" look on the obverse is what I'm thinking of...

As to learning about the series. The Heritage archive is "OK" but you really should look at theses coins LIVE. It is an exceedingly hard series to grade. I will take you a very long time so the next show you go to...start looking! And if there is an auction...look at the lots...keep doing this before you buy ANY more of these coins. Trust me on this one...you'll get ripped off if you don't...I know...I did.

    • There is a show coming to Santa Clara, CA in Nov. Checked my schedule and it figures ,I am working. I've got Sept and Oct off , but my first week back and theres something I want to do.....I feel a cold coming on. Anyway I'll send this coin in to get graded and see what it comes back. Ill post the results when I get it back. I bought the coin off ebay and the more I read these boards the more I kick myself for buying anything off ebay. Anyway I searched the boards for this buyer (as suggested in another post) and find that most here think he overgrades .

Here's a '11 in au58 pcgs. I like it better as a 60/61 but it really won't stretch that far, just a very nice 58. Yours looks just as it was returned to you, a solid 40 but no more. not cleaned that I can see, pretty good strike but obvious pocket change wear. The coin you show probably was earned at one of the factories in the east, a weeks wages to feed the family and take care of your needs. The guy probably got to carry it in his pocket for a little while then something happened. He might of pulled it out of collection when he got it because it looked pretty good, or it might have been a present for Christmas and the receiver kept it (that was common back then). You look to have a very nice, honest nice coin.

      sorry about the mis-post
