Bodybag question for PCGS...

Will PCGS bodybag a coin if there are scratches on the side of the coin? I just received a nice 1923 buffalo but don't want to waste the time or money sending it off if it won't slab.

I don't think PCGS will bodybag the coin for those grooves on the edge.

  • I've always been under the impression that the rim is not actually considered part of the coin.

I think it actually plays Stairway to Heaven if you rotate it under a record needle.

    Hi,
but do I have to play it backwards?

  • I would think it would be a shame if PCGS did not grade that Buffalo....

That's not true, especially for bust type lettered edge coins- and pcgs does use the edge to look for some fakes. Some altered buffalos with mintmark added will have telltale signs on the edge....

  • I think those are ejection scratches made as the coin was forced up out of the collar. Although they are a lot stronger than what I've usually seen. I'm thinking possibly a new collar whose inner surface is still rough. (If you examine the edges of new silver eagles you will see similar scratches. They aren't as noticable though because of the reeding. On the smooth edge of a nickel they really stand out.)
  • that is a nice looking buff. I think they will slab it

    I agree.....It'll fly.....

  • Unless it's a coin with a lettered edge, I don't think they grade the third side.

  • They wont BB it for the scratch, but you may get one of these.....

I've never seen a bodybag like that one. Is that new? Or old?

    Russ, NCNE
  • Thats an older bodybag Russ from the 90's.

    Cameron Kiefer
  • Yes, that is older. I have had that for awhile.

Yep, that's correct. Also a key sign in detecting counterfeit $10 indian gold pieces you look at the edge as well. Most counterfeiters use a "stock" edge (there are star designs on the edge, also referred to as the "third side" of a coin) and if you look under the rim of this coin only a 10x or so loupe, if its counterfeit there's a high possibility you would see short, stubby, tool marks between the stars.
  • Your Buffaloe will slab OK, it's a nice coin.
PCGS does check the rim, but you don't have the coin sorter/counter machine grab marks on the rim, so you're OK.
They do the bodybag routine with some style nowadays too.
You get something like this on the flip, and you can even lookup the number in the registry too.
