Sounds like they will be putting the buffalo on the back again.

  • So when are we going to see some pictures??? I say they should go back to the Liberty head nickels.

Yeah, they'll probably do a retake on the buffalo reverse, but I am more hopeful for the 'V' reverse.

If that buffalo reverse goes back on the nickel we will see an explosion in new collector interest unlike anything we have seen in our lifetimes!

I agree, the state quarters wont hold a candle to the new nickel if they put a Buffalo on the reverse. This could be very good for the hobby.

    Do you live in Cincinnati???????????
  • I thought a law was passed that required Monticello to be returned to the nickel reverse and Jefferson to stay on the obverse.

theop: You are 100% correct but not until 2006!

That gives us a one year window in 2005 for everyone to go nuts over the 1 year design. Hopefully it will be circulated instead of just hoarded. The US Mint better be ready to do billions of these nickels if it is the "buffalo" design.

    FYI,

The quote on the reverse is a direct one from one of the Lewis and Clark diaries. Actually, they had to change the spelling of Ocean back from Ocein as it was spelling in the diary. This was pointed out at today's news conference at the Mint.

  • Now if the mint could just figure out how to put some higher relief back into it's coins.

I do like the obverse design and the Buffalo reverse.
  • I like those coins much better than the 2004 nickels...

Now if the mint could just figure out how to put some higher relief back into it's coins.

please explain what you don't understand about the current minting process that would lead to the above comment. certainly you understand that the low relief designs of the current day are a function of what's needed for reasonable die life when faced with striking an issue in the hundreds of millions for commerce. you do understand that fact, right??

oh, how i harken back to the days when the country's population was a few million, coinage requirements were amazingly high if they were in the hundreds of thousands and the populace was lucky to see an issue in their pocket---------yet designs were criticized. apparently some things never change.

  • I bet that jefferson obverse will look spectacular in proof..These new changes are certainly going to bring in some new collectors and heat the market up even more.

Overall, I think they did a pretty good job. At least until I see one in hand. image
  • Given the mint's recent creations...a suprisingly good design.

  • ( just for the sake of being bored ) What term are we going to give to the new....Buffalo nickel??? I mean, it seems like a lot of hassle to try and get the complete term for the coin out.... Jefferson nickel with buffalo design rev, 2005 buffalo nickel , jefferson/buffalo..... How would you describe this coin, simply put, and to the point? As far as later on down the road a couple of years from now, when we can't say "the new nickel design " . Or is what I just stated going to be the easiest way to sum up the coin....

I like them...but I would like to see a little beefier Buffalo on the reverse. This one looks like a girly buffalo.

Me like the designs. IMHO they are better than the design for the 2004 nickels. As for a short name to describe the 2005 nickels, hmmmmmm........................., how about one of the following:

    #1 - "Jeffalo" nickel; or

    #2 - "Bufferson" nickel?

Personally I like "Jeffalo" nickel better.

Any other nicknames you can think of? If so, please favor us with your creativity and wit.
  • My five cents on the subject:
Buffalo reverse: Been there & done that. The original Buffalo nickel was graphically strong...didn't turn the Buffalo into a small object in the center of the field. Insipid & unoriginal.

New Jeff obverse: nice....we've finally broken the iron fist of symmetry by having enlarged portriat to the left side, rather than the typical smaller "object in a field" type coin design.

Ocean reverse: not bad...hopefully hills & water will be rendered with some interesting textures.

Keelboat reverse: yuck....same miniscule "object in a field" type design. The boat is far too complex for such a small coin. An enlargment showing just a portion of the boat, similar to the new Jeff obverse design, would've been less static and more interesting.
