    Questions:

How long did it take for you to complete this set?

Did you buy raw, already slabbed, or some combination?

What makes you say the series is undervalued?

Ah, so that's where all the nice coins have been going. Congratulations on the wire and rolled edges, the 20, 30, and 33...exceptionally tough coins just to find much less find in ms and even more rare to find them at the levels you have. Stunning set and quite an achievement. That is a very nice bit of work and you really have something extroardinary! Good luck!

I started my set building in January when I purchased most of my $5 Indians at the Superior Elite Sale. I then bought a bunch of $10 Indians from Stacks in the Michaels Collection sale although many of those coins were substandard. I picked up my 1913-s and 1911-d gems from a dealer on a $220K trade and then bought the $10 1933 from Heritage a couple of months ago. I have tried to upgrade where possible and still have several coins which should upgrade. My Saints will always be missing the 27-d but I have several of those which are better than the assigned grade. I will try to submit them again in due time.
  • Holy smokes, that's quite an accomplishment, congrats.image

The $10's I bought in the Stacks sale were the 1909-d in MS66, the 1910-s in MS66, the 1911-d in MS64 (which I have sold when I got my 65), the 1912-s in MS65, the 1915-s in MS65, the 1920-s in MS66. I also ended up buying the 1908 No Motto from a dealer at a markup over the selling price at the Stacks sale. The rest I bought from all different dealers and collectors. I just sold my duplicate 20-s in MS63 to Bedrock Gold & Silver.

Do you know anything about the pedigree of your 20-S? What is the specimen that is graded higher than yours...who does (or did) own that...I can't remember now?

    Good job!

  • As another afficianado of gold coins, that is an outstanding accomplishment. Congratulations!

The 20-s came from the Michaels collection which Stacks offered early this year. I do not think that is the sellers real name however. David Akers refers to the coin in his book as the Stack's 1984 coin. Doctor Steven Duckor owns the MS67 which he purchased in 1979 for the then princely sum of $80000. That would probably be the highest graded and finest known example. I have seen several examples of this date including the Dwight Manley coin which is currently available from Rare Coin Alliance for around $250K (It grades MS65). I just sold my MS63 example for $60K to Bedrock Gold & Silver and I had another MS63 (NGC) example which I sold a few months back to Delaware Valley Rare Coin. There are only about 19 graded coins at MS63 or higher and I have seen or owned half of those. A really rare coin......

  • It's always nice to see someone complete a gold series, regardless of the grades, and these are nicer than most. Good show!

Fantastic achievement and a fabulous set! Congratulations! image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Wow, what a set.
    Congratualtions.

I am quite surprised the value of an MS63 has gone up so much the last couple of years. They used to bid at about $27K now they are sitting at $42K (bid values only). That is more than 50%. Yikes!

I would only be in the market for a nice PQ AU58....if I could even find one. image

Jom, I was reluctant to sell the 20-s at $60K because I will never find another one for that money. Yes, the sheet has moved up but that means nothing for a date like that. It is the set stopper and although there are a few gems out there, grades like AU58-MS62 are really tough to find.......

    Congrats!!!!

Doesn't that 1908 Motto just drive you crazy? I have one like that in my set and it's like a constant itch that I can't reach to scratch .... image

    Very awesome...

Where did the 11-S come from?

    John
  • jpkinlajpkinla Posts: 822 ✭✭✭
The 11-s came from "The Boilerplate Collection" when it was sold and broken up by U.S. Coins. I believe the piece origianlly came from a Heritage sale. I happen to have a second 11-s in MS66 if you have an interest. The total population is 8 and I have two of them! It would be priced at $17K.....
  • jpkinlajpkinla Posts: 822 ✭✭✭
Hi Nut. Yes, it was the last coin I bought for the set. I bought two of them from the Heritage sale at Long Beach. One of them will surely upgrade to MS65 as they were both quite nice. Its amazing how a common date like that can't be found when you want one. I will find a MS66 in the future I am sure and that coin exists in MS67 and MS68.....
  • coinlieutenantcoinlieutenant Posts: 9,310 ✭✭✭✭✭
I thought that was where it came from....

I am kicking myself over not buying that coin... Have been for a while...

    Oh well...

You can buy my extra one if you want it! I also have an extra 1910-s in PCGS MS65 (pop 2, 2 better) priced at $40K
