Pros... Cons ???????
Would you feel comfortable spending 3-5K with them sight unseen ?????
Will they stand behind their return policy ????
Will they allow extra time to submit ??????????
FOLLOW-UP.................................... ADDED 9-15 1PM CST
Called L & C today at their "inquiries" (non-toll free) telephone #..............
My call was answered by a lady/woman (not trying to be sexist, just stating facts).......... I said that I was inquiring about an 1872-CC Seated Dollar in VF that they had advertised in their 9-20-04 Coin World ad on page 6............ She asked ME if it was a certified coin
I said that was going to be my question to her.......... She came back to the phone in a minute or so and told me that the coin was not certified.......... I asked her if there was a reason for it being raw (I'm thinking many, if not most, $3000 coins in this series are slabbed).....
She excused herself again and like before returned to the phone within a minute or so and said.......... "I guess he just didn't send it in"
I then asked if they could submit the coin before purchase............ Again, she left me on hold, and when she returned she said "He says if you want a certified example of this coin, maybe you just oughta buy one that way"
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS TRYING TO DO !!!!!!!!
Here's to you, L & C Coins, Los Alamitos, CA........... My money will be spent somewhere else........ and I encourage board members to do the same !!!!!!!!!!!!!

AIRBORNE!
The recommendation I would make is to stay with certified coins (NGC or PCGS, maybe ANACS) and talk to them. There is nothing better than having a point of contact who knows your name. No large firm ever stayed in business by selling one to a number of collectors. The key is repeat business. You are talking about non trivial dollars (at least to me), so I would hope they would be interested in talking to you.
Good Luck!
l&c does have a return policy, so you are NOT buying sight-unseen.

that's only 1 experience, for what it's worth.

frankly, i agree w/ her attitude & think your approach was just plain rude. if you want a slabed coin, slab it yourself. why should a dealer take all the risk?
i say kudos to l & c, & whatever biz they lost of yours, i'm gonna try & make up.

I was left with the impression that they weren't interested in attracting knowledgable collectors, but preferred people who would accept problem coins without carping about it.

I did encounter one occasion where they would not honor the price on their website - of course, they wanted more! I did not buy that coin - I thought it was a bait-and-switch.
My phone conversations went exactly as yours did - I felt I was talking to an interpreter.
Even with my positive experience, I would not spend $3k on an unseen coin. A return privilege would be a must.

<< <i>Ordered a BU 1943 steel cent roll from them and the first coin I took out of the roll was a solid gem with a 5% rim clip ($100 coin by itself and the rest of the roll was original also). >>
I don't mean to nitpick, but please tell me where I can sell my stell cent clips for $100 each. It's a nice find but probably worth less than half your estimate.
