L & C from Los Alamitos......... FOLLOW-UP ADDED

Pros... Cons ???????

Would you feel comfortable spending 3-5K with them sight unseen ?????

Will they stand behind their return policy ????

Will they allow extra time to submit ??????????

FOLLOW-UP.................................... ADDED 9-15 1PM CST

Called L & C today at their "inquiries" (non-toll free) telephone #..............
My call was answered by a lady/woman (not trying to be sexist, just stating facts).......... I said that I was inquiring about an 1872-CC Seated Dollar in VF that they had advertised in their 9-20-04 Coin World ad on page 6............ She asked ME if it was a certified coin image

I said that was going to be my question to her.......... She came back to the phone in a minute or so and told me that the coin was not certified.......... I asked her if there was a reason for it being raw (I'm thinking many, if not most, $3000 coins in this series are slabbed).....
She excused herself again and like before returned to the phone within a minute or so and said.......... "I guess he just didn't send it in" image

I then asked if they could submit the coin before purchase............ Again, she left me on hold, and when she returned she said "He says if you want a certified example of this coin, maybe you just oughta buy one that way"

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS TRYING TO DO !!!!!!!!

Here's to you, L & C Coins, Los Alamitos, CA........... My money will be spent somewhere else........ and I encourage board members to do the same !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've bought some nice Morgans and Mercs from them--but I'm talking $200-300 at a time. Just call and see what you can negotiate--the staff I've dealt with have been very nice--they might work with you on submittal.

They do honor their return policy, as I've returned everything I bought from them, except one coin (ordered coins from them 3 times. Never again, 3 strikes and they're out). When I ordered I even told them I don't want any coins that were cleaned or dinged - didn't matter.

I have only dealt with certified (PCGS) Mercs that were 100 to 500. My experiences were all positive. My only comment is that they are in business so prices tend towards the high side.

The recommendation I would make is to stay with certified coins (NGC or PCGS, maybe ANACS) and talk to them. There is nothing better than having a point of contact who knows your name. No large firm ever stayed in business by selling one to a number of collectors. The key is repeat business. You are talking about non trivial dollars (at least to me), so I would hope they would be interested in talking to you.

I bought a nice toned Morgan from them in a 1st Gen PCGS holder. Had a positive experience, but I spent a little over $100.00.

if you get a legitimate return policy as part of buying a coin, that is a SIGHT-SEEN purchase.

l&c does have a return policy, so you are NOT buying sight-unseen.

  • I've only had the best experiences possible dealing with Pete (one of the leading Lincoln experts in the world) there. I have no trust issues with them AT ALL. Almost every raw coin I've bought was undergraded. The rest were properly graded. NONE were overgraded or body bags. They'll even submit for you if you ask them nicely and they'll charge you based on the lower of the grade they think it is when they sell it to you or the grade it comes back as. Any upgrade by PCGS is your icing on the cake. Every slab they've sold me has been more than satisfactory as well. If they sell you a variety raw & you submit it and PCGS doesn't agree (with the variety desiignation) they'll honor a return forever. What more can you ask for?

I have purchased from them. Ask them to certify for you. They will submit, then if the coin comes back lower you have the option of a lower price or not taking it. If it comes back higher, you pay your agreed price. Nice folks to work with.

i have bought a single coin from them for the variety. the transaction was professional, quick & w/out problem.

that's only 1 experience, for what it's worth.

  • Only one purchase on their website, a slabbed Morgan. Smooth transaction. And their website is excellent. Very professional and well organized. They have a huge inventory. I receive their monthly raw coin catalogue and I'm amazed at the number of coins. However raw mail order coins over $100, even with a good return policy, makes me nervous.

frankly, i agree w/ her attitude & think your approach was just plain rude. if you want a slabed coin, slab it yourself. why should a dealer take all the risk?

i say kudos to l & c, & whatever biz they lost of yours, i'm gonna try & make up.

Hey LongtimeCollector, I had a very similar experience with them myself. I bought coins from them twice and had to send them back for cleanings and overgrading. The second and final time I did business with these folks I received an overgraded CC Seated Half and a cleaned better date Seated Half. I sent them back and said that I thought the CC Half was overgraded but would purchase the coin and pay for the certification if they would send it to ANACS. They sent me an email when it returned from ANACS in the lower grade (as I expected it would) and said that if I wanted the coin they would sell it to me for the same price despite the lower grade...to take it or leave it because if I didn't buy it they were going to crack it out and resell it.

I was left with the impression that they weren't interested in attracting knowledgable collectors, but preferred people who would accept problem coins without carping about it.

Wow. When I purchased a Mercury Dime for my set, they offered to send it in. I guess I didn't expect that kind of treatment on a coin of that value.

  • I've only had positive experiences with them. Ordered a BU 1943 steel cent roll from them and the first coin I took out of the roll was a solid gem with a 5% rim clip ($100 coin by itself and the rest of the roll was original also). Also got a 1968s DCAM PR69 Nickel and a 1964 CAM Accented Hair Kennedy from raw proof sets I ordered from them. So I have nothing bad to say at all about these folks only positive experiences here.

I have purchased a couple of slabbed coins from them with no problem.

I did encounter one occasion where they would not honor the price on their website - of course, they wanted more! I did not buy that coin - I thought it was a bait-and-switch.

My phone conversations went exactly as yours did - I felt I was talking to an interpreter.

Even with my positive experience, I would not spend $3k on an unseen coin. A return privilege would be a must.

I bought about 5 1942 D/D Jefferson nickels from them raw. Everyone was the correct variety and graded properly. I am a happy camper.

i just think it's piss-poor to demand & expect that a dealer will slab a coin for you when you can just buy 1 already slabed, which seems to be longtimecollector's issue. i mean, they give you a 15 DAY RETURN privilege, so your buying sight-seen. so why do you need somebody ELSE to tell you whether YOU like the coin or not? why the he11 even bother w/ this hobby if you can't even decide for YOURSELF what you like???

I don't mean to nitpick, but please tell me where I can sell my stell cent clips for $100 each. It's a nice find but probably worth less than half your estimate.

  • Hi seanq, that is just what I've seen the big boys list them at (Fred Weinberg and others). I don't think that's a ridiculous price for a gem uncirculated steel cent error and if you track these like I have (1943 is a magic date for error cents and usually commands a premium) you will see that this price is about right. Now, your question is where can you sell it for that price? Probably not eBay, and it would probably take some time to find a buyer but I'm keeping it so not an issue for me. image

Yes, they honor the return policy. I bought one coin and returned it. Coin was cleaned AND overgraded.

I've bought several raw and certified coins from them through the years and never had any problems. I highly recommend them and yes, I'd feel comfortable spending 3-5k sight unseen. Unfortunately, there are many people who call with no intention of buying coins and want you to get them certified. After time, you get tired of people asking the same questions over and over. When I had a shop in Hawaii, I had the same guy call everyday for a week at 3pm with the same question: "Do you have a 1909 S VDB penny?" yes "Is it raw or certified?" raw Very Fine 20 "If you'll send it to PCGS and get it certified, I might buy it." Finally, I told him not to call again and go out and find a certified example. Instead of having the messages relayed, you should have asked to speak directly to Lee. Personally, I will not conduct business through a secretary like that.
