I have some Proof sets that are doubles and want to send in the coins to be graded. Should I open the mint holder or send them to PCGS in the mint holder?

Pick out the one coin you think is best and send it in. When it comes back, try to sell it . If you do well try another. It would be a good experience, but don't pop a grade fee for each coin unless "your best" comes back well.

Ask yourself if it is worth $80 to get the opinion on $18 worth of coins?

So unless they come back as 70DCAM's it probably wouldn't be worth it
Unless you have good reason to believe a coin is exceptional then the chances it will
be worth the grading fee are poor. 1987 proof sets typically have remarkably nice
coins in them so to warrant the cost of grading they almost have to be perfect.

Before you send them in, you need to research the coins some, and determine if the coins
will grade OK or not. Some coins may be damaged or have some other defect that might cause them to be bodybagged.
Some people collect only the scarce high end low population coins.
Others like to collect only the poorest examples you can get slabbed.
But there are some who just like to slab them anyway for various reasons.

Where would you sell your slabbed proof coins? I did a quick check on eBay and it looks like 1987 proof coins graded PR 69 DCAM by PCGS are going for $9-$13. You have to pay that much to get them graded. You also have to pay for shipping both to PCGS and back. You have to pay eBay and PayPal fees.
But even if you lose money on each coin maybe you can make it up on volume
The Prestige Sets are pretty cool. I would keep it as is and display where you can enjoy it. They are a real conversation piece with friends who visit. Most guests become quite intrigued.
Ask yourself, why am I sending the coins in for grading? Do you plan on selling in the future? Are you collecting or investing? Its up to you!!
