I'd call the obverse a 65. I'll withhold a grade for the entire coin until I can see the entire coin. image

  • I'm not expert (certainly not on saints) but I'll say MS-65 based
    on how clean it looks.

Interesting...it's at PCGS right now...I have seen dozens of these in ms64 (and have the best I saw) and they are crapola...I just bought this as a ms64 that I am 90% certain will be in a 65 holder in 2 days. The lustre is much more brilliant than my crappy dark photo. I have to lighten them up. The upgrade would be worth about $25K more!!!! It's such a gem....I'd be shocked if it didn't go on the first try. STAY TUNEDimage

PS...thanks for the 66 100proof!! That would make the POP 2!!!

$25,000 for a one point upgrade.image Looks like a "no brainer" MS65. Please post the results.
  • Saint, where did you spot this 1909/8 -- coin show, teletrade auction, Fleebay (doubt the latter)? Nice pickup, it is so very difficult to find nice gold coins for reasonable money these days.

Dealer...I just couldn't believe the photo on their site, so I had them send it...I was astonished. It's better than the photo they had. If I ever felt great about an upgrade this is the one...setting myself up for a fall???image

Mike, my comments to follow are aimed at trying to help you and others in evaluating coins, from images and/or in person:

While there might be other legitimate reasons that the coin in question does not grade MS65, a tick or two, of the size in the images provided, would not in themselves preclude a grade of MS65 or higher. These are large images and several small ticks/imperfections can be present on coins of this size, and the coins still grade MS65 or higher.

ms-65, outside chance at ms-66, but you only showed us 1/3 of the coin (no rev or edge) & i can't tell the luster.

It's in a slab, so you can forget about the edge...I only had the obv. downloaded, however it's very, very clean. Inasmuch as there have been MS66 votes, with a POP of ONE I would think it unlikely to break into that lofty hight.

Lots of people are voting MS-65, but from the picture, I don't think that the coin has enough luster to make that grade. I'd say MS-64 from what I can see. If the coin really is brighter than it seems to be from the photo, maybe it is an MS-65.

Bill..the lustre is the most prominent aspect of the coin! When I first opened it, I thought I had the wrong coin, because this date rarely has any flash, so you'll have to excuse my photo. Somehow they lose a lot of quality when I upload them. Stay tuned!

  • Looks like that pop 1/0 MS66 in the registry set is about to be a pop 2/0.

  • Looks like a 65 for sure. But is that a horizontal hairline scratch that runs from Liberty's hip out thru the bottom of the torch and beyond?

    BETTER PICTURE!!

  • I had a 9/8 MS63 PCGS I swore would 4 but it didn't. They grade real tough on Saints with a BIG upside. I think 64 again, and again, and ...
Having said that it sure looks MS65.
I'd rather be lucky than good.

    coltgus...I got a 1909 ms65 go ms66...big jump! also a 1931 ms65 to ms66...bigger jump. There were others too!

  • Definately a nice looking coin, but I counted 9 dings on the obverse in your large scan.

I'm not sure all will be excused for a 65?

    Good Luck though image

You need to be prepared for a 64 on this one. Maybe a 65.
