Has Anyone Ever Sent A Coin In To Be Graded, Hoping For A Lower Grade?

Forget the values. I need a MS66 in a set I'm putting together. I have several 65s and 67s. My first thought was to send some of the higher end 65s in and hope for a bump. But, wouldn't you rather have a high end 66 that was downgraded from a 67 instead of a low end 66 upgraded from a 65? I've never hoped for a lower grade, but I am this time!!!

All the time, usually they are shooting for a P01.

  • I contested a coin I once got back that was graded 2 points too high. They re-graded it what I thought it should be and made it right with me for pointing out the mistake.

I didn't even think of that aspect of it. I meant more in the MS range. I'm just hoping one of the low end MS67s I'm sending in turns into a high end MS66.

I did once, in fact I knew how the grading services were grading a particular series and I asked that the coin be held at a max grade of .

  • WHY , A 67 IS WORTH MORE THAN A 66.
WHY WOULD ANYONE HOPE FOR A LOWER GRADE.????

I submitted an 1859 Indian cent recently which I hoped would come back as AU-58 -- instead it came back MS-61. image
  • Littlejohn, the only reason is I need a MS66. I would rather have a MS66 that use to be a low end MS67 instead of a MS66 that use to be a high end MS65. I realize the $ differences, but for a MS66 I want to keep, that's what I'd prefer.
