The Theodore Roosevelt Half Dollar: Help Make it Happen!

There is a new online petition out, that could bring about the redesign of the Half Dollar. Anyone interested in a New Half Dollar, and in honoring Theodore Roosevelt, should sign this petition:
Theodore Roosevelt Half Dollar Petition.

  • I for one am interested in seeing the image of Liberty back on our nation's coinage, not dead presidents.
  • A depiction of Liberty would certainly be an improvement upon Sacagawea on a dollar coin.

It would be an improvement on any coin. Roosie isn't an improvement over anything. Nor is any other real person.

  • Put Gretta Garbo on there.

  • I agree about the dead presidents. The founding fathers of this country probably saw the gold and silver crowns of many nations circulating in the years before and after the revolution. I don't think they ever intended actual persons, living or dead, to be on our circulating coinage. If the mint wants to do commems honoring famous Americans, that's ok, but not on the circulating coins.

  • Well if we must have another dead president, then TR gets my vote. I'm reading volume 2 of Edmund Morris' biography of TR (TR Rex). I highly recommend it.

  • Bring back Lady Liberty, give the dead presidents a rest.
    - -

Ask me no questions, I'll tell you no lies.
  • And this is why we are likely to be stuck with the same old boring coin designs for years to come. We cannot agree on anything, and therefore cannot send a united message to the lawmakers to change coinage in a specific way. Everyone wants something different.

I know there is a large desire to put Liberty back on our coinage, and I also would support that initiative. However, in today's society it is not going to happen. The majority of people who spend money want boring old dead folks on their coins, for some inexplicable reason, and the powers that be want to keep "their guys" on the coins. TR is a President that crosses political afilliations, and was a true uniter. He is revered by all Americans (who actually know anything about history), and is not nearly as boring a face as half of those which appear on our coins at present.

We need to start a change in coinage, by first getting their attention. The only way to get their attention is to propose something they will like. After that, then we can demand some Liberty coinage, but they'll never listen to that until they bother to take notice of our unified voice for change. The Theodore Roosevelt Half Dollar is just one more step toward a Liberty coin, and if backed enough, it could be the last step between us and Liberty on our Coins.

As for which depiction of Liberty should be on our coins, are any of you familiar with Frank Gasparo's Liberty design which was declined in favor of Susan B. Anthony? It was gorgeous. It would have been a hit, were the Susan B. was a bomb. That should be our next move after TR. Putting that liberty design on the Dollar.
  • I actually vaguely remember seeing the Gasparro proposal you mentioned, but can't remember it clearly. Do you have a pic?

    Edit:
    Nevermind. I found one.

Please, no more portraits on US coins. Is there a counter-petition I can sign?
  • The Frank Gasparro Liberty design should have been where Susan B was placed. That said--remember TR was responsible for some of our most beautiful coinage--e.g., the Indians and Saint.

Theodore Roosevelt almost certainly leads the list of presidents who deserves to be
on a coin and the half dollar is most appropriate. However, I am with the majority here
and would more like to see a move away from presidents on coins and a strong avoidance
    of depicting any real people.

He was also responsible for starting us on the slippery slope of using real people on coins as well - the Lincoln cent.
  • I think we should all just start using casino tokens or barter goods and do away with coinage!

Hmm.... second attempt, first one didn't go through for some reason.
I have been saying that ben deserves his spot back on the half for years now. He was robbed when JFK was killed.

  • If we all stand together about this TEddy Roosevelt half thing, then they will think that we actually WANT dead presidents on our coins and give us more of them, not less.

As for the Frankie, thing. The series was ended prematurely. There IS a law on the books that a coin design must be used for, I think, 25 years before it can be changed. That would have carried the Franklins into 1973.

  • I've said for years that Theodore Roosevelt deserves to be on a coin. I'll take TR over no change at all. Petition signed, six signatures so far. image
  • In addition to returning to Liberty images, I would also like to see the dollar coin returned to it's former glory. The downsizing of 1979 never made sense to me. Their reasoning was that dollar coins were too large and bulky and if they made them smaller people would use them. Hello?? How many dollar coins do you run into in circulation everyday?? They were everywhere for a while when they first came out, but where are they now?? All those Sacs and Anthonys and are still sitting in piles in the Federal Reserves vaults right next to the hated Ikes waiting for the next big coinage dump to be foisted on the American people, who don't want them. The thing that I really don't understand, though, is if they have billions and billions of dollar coins already gathering dust, why do they continue to make millions more every year instead of using up the ones they already have?? The only thing that is going to make a dollar coin work, is to eliminate the dollar bill, and that's an unpopular move, as well.
