Dealer Pricing Codes...

I've always wondered how dealers come up with theirs... you know, the labels with a few numbers and letters so the dealer knows the history of the coin. For example, a dealer at a show last weekend said his 5 (maybe 6?) character code gave him the coin, date, and price. Dang!

Just curious how most dealers come up with a code, and if anyone here uses one.

Have a tic tac toe code but in a different sequence.

Kinda funny to watch people try to read it actually.

  • Good question, Jeremy! That would be interesting to know, but I doubt anyone would reveal what "theirs" means. On a side note, I once watched auctions from a frequent seller on Yahoo. After a while I started noticing that on his 2X2 holders, he had Roman numerals written on the reverse side. It didn't take long to figure out that he had written his cost in the coin. It could have been reserve prices, but he never had that posted on his auctions. It was cool in that I knew just how high I would need to go if I bid. Only got one item from him and it was marked with a piece of tape on the GSA holder with the usual Roman numerals. He was selling it as a MS-63, it graded 64-DPL from NGC...image

I have a friend who is a space flight fan. He coded his inventory by: A DISCOVERY
    .
Personally, I use 4 different codes and can tell when and where I purchased the coin and for how much.
