Here are the rules on dealers posting pics of coins

OK....here's the official rule which I will tell you I did not know.
If you're a dealer (or any seller of coins?) you can not post an image of a coin if you have a link to a web site which offers the coin you wish to post an image of.
Well, there you go. I can live with that. I did not know that was a rule. I knew that some people didn't like it and thought that some (me, I guess) were posting images to promote sales, but I posted images of coins to share the images. I know you may question my integrity but I have plenty of images of coins that I have either sold or that have not been listed.
I will adhere to the rules.
By the way, do you know why the image of the pink coin I posted the other day violated "the rules"? (Hint....it was not because the coin appeared on my web site...it didn't.....I had already sold it.)

Aslong as my inital "intent" was okay - then I'm okay....right??!?

what really ticks me off are the dealers that have the same coin for "BUY IT NOW" on eBay and also simultaneously available over the phone, and listed on a website. Now, that is against the rules! Ebay rules I mean. I have lost out on a GREAT Walker Proof from a Proof dealer in TX because of this stupidity. Called, reserved the coin, started a lay-away, made 2 payments, bought other coins, received confirming emails - call a week and a half later to pay off balance and get told "oh - sorry, it was sold in an eBay auction days before we sold it to you." This was true, but I had made confirmed payments, several, before the other "buyer". I'll not deal with them again - regardless!
Best,
Billy

To simplify the rule, if you are a seller of a coin (dealer or not), no matter whether or not there is a link to the website, the coin should not be posted here.
There are numerous examples that I can think of (like the pink Kennedy) where it would be nice to have an eductional post on a coin in a dealer's inventory. If that were allowed, however, we would have all kinds of "educational posts" and this board would be cluttered with inventory for sale.
However, if there is a coin for sale at another dealer's website, like this one for example:
I am free to post it all I want since I am not the owner of the coin (not yet, and if and when I own it, it will NOT be for sale!).
It wouldn't be long before people joined the board for no other reason than to post photos of coins that "just happen" to be for sale, and if no one said anything until then, those people would be whining that "Why is it OK for members X, Y and Z to do it, but not me?" By then it would be too late as the precedent would be set, and the board would be filled with posts of coins for sale under the pretense of only wanting to discuss them.
I just prefer having a clean separation between the BST board and the discussion board. Again, it has nothing to do with you personally. I don't think you are the type to play that game anyway.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

If you want to post a pic of a coin you need to post it in the Buy, Sell & Trade forum.
As for this being a rule, my guess it's one you all are deciding for yourselves.
Tho, I can see things getting out of hand quickly if it got opened up like this.
Sounds like Heritage. They're infamous for that.
Adrian,
Your pictures are really nice but I especially love your witty, eclectic, & offbeat auction descriptions.
A fellow, lets say K6AZ sees it and comments: "That's a nice coin"
If I reply - "Eric - it's your if you want to buy it"
and he does
Was that a rules violation?
Not the above ever happened, or did I possibly get accused of nefarious intentions by asking a question about teh holder, or anything.
ps: Eric I hope you've taken good care of that coin.
ooopsies
I ended up selling that to a good friend of mine down in the Atlanta area.

grrrrr!!!
I think you have violated the rules by discussing a coin sale in a thread about posting pics of coins for sale.
Perhaps Cammie can clarify this for us, or I could run out and get a root canal, whichever is less annoying,
but definately one of the two.

If I want to post an image of a coin, that coin must not be available for sale in my eBay store, if I have a link in my signature line which will take a person to the store where the item is available.
I'm guessing that PCGS is trying to prevent a couple of things:
people trying to sell their stuff under the guise of "sharing a crappy image of a crappy coin and
giving something away that others are paying for (banner advertising is sold to coin dealers...they pay good money for the banner ads....why should Crane get to show off images of coins everyone knows he just listed in his eBay store?)
So, the rule is, you can show an image but you can't have the item available in a "store" that you have linked in your signature line (that space in the bottom of each post)
Jerry
the rule is easily skirted, as hopefully my marginally humorous posts of late have illustrated.......by
taking a coin out of eBay temporarily and showing images of it....
getting someone else to show images of the coin and stating that so and so owns it...
showing images of a coin that you will list the next day (and announcing that you are going to do so)
showing images of a coin that you may buy and offer in the future......
Why am I pointing this out?
Why, of course, because I'm a ........lawyer.
[and by the way, for you new forum monitors/police with less than 200 posts, my prediction is that if someone ran a poll "should
ANACONDA (also known as 'dances with ego') be able to post images of any coin he wants to?" I would win with better than 75% of the vote.]

Kinda like the "smaller your _________, the bigger your car...
(I get around on a skateboard.)
Adrian,
Perhaps I am mistaken or the rules have changed but again, but the "no solicitation" policy on this forum is member-driven, not PCGS-mandated.
